HTC One X Android 4.4 KitKat Update Officially Dead

Published

on

Earlier this month we received additional details regarding Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for the popular but aging HTC One X on AT&T, and One X+ but today the company crushed any hopes of an update to KitKat.

After following along for some time, it appears that HTC has decided not to update the once flagship devices to Google’s latest release of Android, even if Android 4.4 KitKat was built with aging devices in mind. Instead the last update for both the One X and One X+ will be Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and Sense UI 5, and even that is a maybe at this point. The update to KitKat is officially dead.

While we already assumed the update to KitKat would never make it to the HTC One X, today HTC themselves put the final nail in the coffin with multiple posts confirming the update was dead, including this very to the point post on Twitter.

Previously it appeared that at least the US AT&T HTC One X would receive Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but if we’re going from the statements made above, even that won’t happen. Considering the update has been delayed multiple times, this seems accurate, and users could end up being stuck on the hopefully coming soon Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update.

As many of you know, Google made Android 4.4 KitKat with aging and budget devices in mind, ones with single-core processors and 512MB of RAM, so technically there should be no reason HTC can’t keep these devices up to date, but sadly that won’t be happening, and support is officially dying after Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

This certainly isn’t good news for current HTC One X owners, but hey, a new HTC One+ (M8) should be coming soon with Android 4.4 KitKat, so that’s another option for HTC fans.
