iPhone 6’s Best Feature May Be More than Just a Big Screen

iPhone 6 rumors point to a larger display for two iPhone 6 models, but a new report suggests Apple has a trick up its sleeve to make the iPhone 6 display stand out as much more than just a larger iPhone.

The iPhone 6 may use a newer screen technology, similar to that found on the Kindle Fire HDX 7 to deliver a better looking display that is also larger. If this rumor is true, we could see Apple rely heavily on the display in marketing for a new iPhone.

Apple CEO Tim Cook repeatedly blasted the quality of larger displays when answering questions about why the company did not offer a larger iPhone, and this report suggests Apple may be combining a larger display with a better screen for the iPhone 6 release later this year.

The iPhone 6 could use a new display technology with many benefits.

The iPhone 6 could use a new display technology with many benefits.

A new report from Forbes connects the dots on a larger screen iPhone 6 with activity in new display technology, suggesting Apple is planning an iPhone 6 with a better looking display. The report claims Apple will likely use Quantum Dot technology in the iPhone 6, pointing to four Quantum Dot patent applications and rumors of a Quantum Dot technology in the works at Apple in 2013.

The report states that the iPhone 6 will likely use a Quantum Dot display with a wider color gamut than the Kindle Fire HDX 7. Essentially a wider color gamut means the ability to produce more colors, which should help Apple deliver better looking photos, videos and apps on an iPhone 6.

In the report, Jason Hartlove, Nanosysm CEO, shares the first phone with a Quantum Dot display will arrive by the middle of the year, and there is no restriction on the size of the display. This could line up with a rumored summer iPhone 6 release date, or we could see it land on a smaller name device before an Apple version arrives on an iPhone 6 with a Retina Display+ this fall.

The report suggests Apple is working on a Quantum Dot iPhone 6 display that will be unique to Apple, similar to the Retina Display. There are many high-resolution displays that use more pixels per inch than a Retina Display, but consumers only find Retina on an Apple device.

Nanoco Group shares the benefits of QD display in a TV, which could translate to an iPhone 6 display. These benefits include the following enhancements that would be right at home on a new iPhone for 2014,

  • Thinner display
  • Better power management
  • Better contrast and readability
  • Improved viewing experience with better color purity

These benefits of  QD display would allow Apple to boast about the new Retina Display and show consumers that the company is offering more than just a large screen with a Sapphire cover.

Apple is working on a new iPhone for 2014 that many call the iPhone 6. Current iPhone 6 rumors agree on a larger display and many suggest two iPhone 6 models with larger displays are likely. We also expect an Apple A8 processor and an improved camera in a new iPhone. The iPhone 6 release is rumored for summer or fall, with a fall release date more likely given the anticipation of an iOS 8 announcement this summer and past Apple announcements.

When is Apple gonna serve up something different? Honestly it’s the same old phone from the 3 to the 5s, it’s like they just keep moving the spots around on the same old leopard…..
