Nexus 5 Problem Identified, Google Working on Fix for Battery Life

Published

An annoying Nexus 5 problem that causes high processor use and poor Nexus 5 battery life is identified and Google is working on fixes for a Nexus 5 update.

Over the past several months users complained of bad Nexus 5 battery life, eventually nailing down a problem with apps accessing the camera and a process not quitting. This causes the Nexus 5, and some other Android devices including the Galaxy Note 3, to get warm and run through battery in hours according to complaints.

This problem is commonly found on devices with Snapchat, Skype or other camera accessing applications installed, but it is not a bug with those applications.

A lengthy forum discussion about the mm-qcamera-daemon Nexus 5 problem and Galaxy Note 3 problem exists on Google, as users provide feedback to engineers who are trying to fix this major Nexus 5 problem.

In an update this week a Google Project Member replied sharing news that Google identified fixes and is currently testing to see if they resolve this Nexus 5 problem. The member writes,

“We believe we have fixes for the current high CPU reports on N5 due to mm-qcamera-daemon, and they will be included in the next maintenance update. At this point, we don’t need more reports of the problem, with some exceptions I’ll detail below.”

This is great news for the users who are experiencing bad Nexus 5 battery life thanks to this camera bug. Some Nexus 5 owners are also reporting camera issues that include a whining noise while filming video with the Nexus 5. While Google identified the cause of this Nexus 5 problem and is working on a mm-qcamera-daemon fix for the next update, we don’t know when this will roll out to the Nexus 5. The team member writes,

“Unfortunately, I can’t provide an estimate for when the maintenance update will be ready, due to all the testing we need to do for this and other fixes. Until then, rebooting the phone is the only way to stop the high CPU usage/lack of camera function once it starts.”

For users that are seeing the high CPU usage issues associated with the mm-qcamera-daemon problem on the Galaxy Note 3 or other devices the team member explains that the users need to submit the issue elsewhere.

“I’d also like to note that instances of high CPU use of mm-qcamera-daemon on other devices besides the N5 need to be reported to their manufacturers – while those devices also use a Qualcomm chip for their camera processing (and thus have a mm-qcamera-daemon process), each has differences in their software and issues with them do not necessarily mean the N5 has the same problem, and vice versa.”

Until Google releases this fix users can try removing applications that access the camera like Skype or Snapchat. Another solution is to reboot the phone, but this is not a permanent fix.

Nexus 5 user here… Strongly recommend downloading a power control widget (I use Power Toggles). When WiFi is on, turn Mobile Data off. When Mobile Data is on, turn Wifi off. Runs for days without charge.

I deleted Skype and it seems to have really extended the battery life back to normal levels.
