Galaxy S3 & Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 Update Details Arrive for US

A U.S. carrier has confirmed a number of Android 4.4 KitKat updates for Samsung Galaxy devices today including the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update.

Last month, Samsung USA confirmed a handful of Android 4.4 KitKat updates for the United States. At the time though, the company refused to confirm specific dates or specific carriers, leaving those announcements to individual carriers. And while we don’t have any specific dates, we finally have confirmation from a carrier.

Today, Sprint confirmed a number of Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades including updates for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, both of which rolled out several days ago. The carrier also confirmed several other updates including Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2, two of Sprint’s aging Galaxy smartphones. It also says that it will be upgrading the Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy Mega and Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 to Android 4.4 KitKat.

Sprint says that it will be sharing release dates in the future but that it doesn’t have any news to share today. This means that Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 owners will probably be waiting in the dark ahead of its release given Sprint’s past. American carriers typically confirm roll outs on the day that an update rolls out.

As expected, the updates are going to be incremental and will bring Android 4.4 KitKat features to Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 owners. Here is what Sprint says will be on board:

  • Location Menu: An integrated location menu enables users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location service capabilities.
  • Enhanced Messaging: Hangouts now includes SMS and MMS and a larger assortment of updated Emoji icons.
  • Upgraded Google Mobile Service (GMS) apps: Users can automatically back up photos and video and can open, view, rename and share Google Docs and files.
  • Updated Lock Screen Features: The lock screen now allows users to quickly access the camera with a new shortcut and view album art while music is playing.

Sprint becomes the first carrier to confirm these updates outright for the United States though we do expect other carriers to follow suit. AT&T, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon all carry the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 and they too should roll out these two updates in the future.

Rumors suggest that Samsung is planning to start these roll outs either in March or April though those dates did not apply specifically to the United States.

The U.S. has been at the front of the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat deployments so it’s entirely possible that it will be at the front for these new Android 4.4 KitKat updates as well.
