Over the last week, iPhone 6 rumors have picked up and those leaks have been punctuated with an alleged iPhone 6 case leak that offers a look at what case manufacturers think the new 2014 iPhone could look like when it arrives on shelves later on this year to replace the iPhone 5s.
Apple still isn’t ready to talk about the iPhone 6 but that hasn’t stopped an avalanche of rumors and leaks from emerging ahead of its highly anticipated launch date. Leaks and rumors have pointed to everything from its screen size, screen resolution, release date, processor, camera, and more.
In the past week alone, we’ve heard that the iPhone 6 might make the jump to a higher resolution and that its release is likely to land in September as opposed to August. We’ve also seen how the iPhone 6 design might match up against top tier devices like the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and the iPhone 5s.
The iPhone 6 rumor train is showing no signs of slowing down either. This week MobileFun, a retailer that sells accessories for smartphones and tablets, leaked several sets of supposed iPhone 6 cases, cases that it says show off the potential iPhone 6 design.
These supposed iPhone 6 cases appear to be fit for an extremely slim smartphone. The iPhone 6 is rumored to be slim. They also look like they were made with a larger iPhone in mind. The iPhone 6 is rumored to be around 4.7-inches in size with another model rumored to be coming with a much larger 5.5-inch display.
The cases are standard fare and come in a variety of shapes and patterns to accommodate an iPhone. However, it’s important to note that while these mockups are aligned with some iPhone 6 rumors, there is no guarantee that this is what the iPhone 6 will look like. We’ve seen manufacturers gamble on the iPhone design before and lose and we could see the same thing happen here with the 2014 iPhone.
Alleged iPhone 6 mockup continue to show rounded edges that will supposedly be a trademark of the iPhone 6’s design. We also have seen how the button layout might change on Apple’s next iPhone, something that doesn’t seem to be depicted here. Rumors suggest that Apple will shift the power button to the size of the phone and change the look of the volume keys that reside on the side.
iPhone 6 rumors suggest that Apple could deliver an iPhone 6 that is up to 26% thinner than the iPhone 5s. A recent leak from Ukrainian website suggests Apple is aiming for a smartphone as thin as 6mm, but Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities believes a 6.5 – 7mm thickness is easier for the company to achieve. Recent leaks agree with Kuo’s assessment and point to an iPhone 6 that could measure right around 7mm thin.
In a note shared by MacRumors, Kuo also says that he believes that the iPhone 6 will come with a power button on right and narrower bezels. Kuo accurately predicted many of the iPhone 5s’ features before its launch last September so his information is considered more credible than most.
As we push deeper into 2014, iPhone 6 rumors are starting to firm up. Rumors currently point to two different iPhone 6 models. One model is said to be between 4.5-inches and 4.7-inches in size. This is the model that these cases appear to be depict.
The other iPhone 6 is thought to be somewhere around 5.5-inches or 5.7-inches. Recent leaks have shown just how a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 could compare to the 4.7-inch model. The 5.5-inch version would likely be a direct competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, a device that is rumored to be arriving around the same time as the iPhone 6.
The biggest iPhone 6 leak to date comes from the well-sourced Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. He sees an iPhone 6 coming with some substantial upgrades including:
- iPhone 6 Screen Size and Resolution – 4.7- inch (1334 x 750) 5.5-inch (1920 x 1080).
- iPhone 6 Release Dates – 4.7-inch in September, 5.5-inch in Holiday season.
- iPhone 6 Design – Power button on right, narrower bezels, larger iPhone 6 as two-hands needed.
- iPhone 6 Camera – No major Megapixel bump, but added image stability.
- iPhone 6 Specs – A8, 1GB RAM, Touch ID, 6.5mm to 7mm thickness, NFC.
A 9to5Mac report suggests that the iPhone 6 could come with a 1794 x 960 Retina Display and the same 16:9 aspect ratio that it has applied to its iPhones since the iPhone 5′s release back in 2012. This jump in resolution would lead to better, crisper looking on-screen content.
Kuo’s release date information lines up with rumors that point to an iPhone 6 release date in September. It’s still not clear if both iPhone 6 models, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will emerge in the fall. Rumors have pointed to a delayed release for the larger iPhone, possibly into 2015, though that information obviously remains unconfirmed.
