iOS 7.1.2 Update Bringing Possible iMessage Fix Ahead of iOS 8 Release

Published

on

iOS 8 is most likely just right around the corner with Apple’s annual WWDC developers conference coming up early next month, but the company is apparently working on another minor update to iOS 7.1.

Details about this update are completely unknown, but it’s possible that it could come with a fix that remedies the recent iMessage problems that many users have been having. Apple has received a lot of flack over the last couple of weeks due to an issue with iMessage that prevents iPhone users to switch over to Android without first going through an annoying process of deregistering their phone number with iMessage.

iOS 7.1.2 could fix this issue and put an end to all the problems that Android refugees have been experiencing when switching from iPhone.

iOS 7.1.2 update coming with iMessage fix

MacRumors reports that its traffic logs are seeing a small, but increasing number of users who are using iOS 7.1.2, which means that the update could be in the testing stages, although that probably won’t last long since it’s just a minor update that will likely not be put through a lengthy beta process — similar to the recent iOS 7.1.1 update that was released late last month.

This minor update could also fix a small, yet major issue with email encryption, where a security flaw would leave stored email attachments unencrypted in the default Mail app. At the time, Apple said that it was aware of the issue and would introduce a fix in a future software update; iOS 7.1.2 may be that future software update.

As for the iMessage issue, many former iPhone users aren’t receiving text messages from other iPhone users on their new device, and it’s because their phone number is still registered with iMessage. This means that anyone sending you a text message from their iPhone will get a “Delivered” stamp, confirming that you apparently received the text message, but in fact you never received it since Apple still thinks your phone number belongs to iMessage.

Of course, Apple employees have provided a handful of “solutions” in order to help users fix the issue, but they’re quite idiotic and not helpful at all. The support staff suggested having your contacts delete your contact and re-adding you, and even going as far as recommending that users switch back to iPhone to solve the problem.

In order to actually fix the issue, many users have claimed that turning off iMessage from their iPhone will deregister their phone number and clear it from Apple’s iMessage servers. At that point, users can switch to their new phone where they’ll begin receiving text messages without a problem. However, several Gotta Be Mobilereaders have said that this solution still doesn’t work, so your mileage may vary.

We’re not sure when we’ll see the release of iOS 7.1.2, but we could easily see it arrive before iOS 8 gets unveiled early next month, and that’s just right around the corner. However, we also wouldn’t be surprised if the minor update was released afterward, since we most likely won’t see iOS 8 officially launch until later in the year.

iOS 8 looks to keep the same overall look and feel of iOS 7, but it’s expected to arrive with new apps, including Healthbook, Preview, TextEdit and Tips. Healthbook has been rumored for quite some time as Apple’s own take on fitness and health tracking, while Preview and TextEdit are Mac apps that look to be making the jump to iOS.

iOS 8 is also expected to come with true iPad multitasking where users will be able to use two apps at the same time side-by-side, similar to how Microsoft’s Surface tablet handles multitasking, as well as a handful of Samsung Galaxy devices.
