iOS 7.1.2 Problems Plague iPhone Users Yet Again

It’s been a few days since iOS 7.1.2 was released, but many users are still suffering from issues with the update, specifically their iPhones freezing midway through the update.

We discussed some of the initial problems that many iPhone users have been having, but one glaring issue that some folks are coming across is during the actual installation process for the iOS 7.1.2 update.

In a thread on Reddit, several users have mentioned that their iPhone has frozen in the middle of the iOS 7.1.2 update installation, and some users even experienced their iPhone shutting down entirely, requiring a boot up and starting the process all over again.

For iPhones that become frozen, users are saying that they performed a hard reset (holding down the Home button and Power button at the same time) and “the update finished just fine after the reboot.”

Unfortunately, this doesn’t look like something you can prevent from happening in the first place, but most users are agreeing that simply rebooting your iPhone will fix the problem, and the iOS 7.1.2 update will proceed without a problem.

This specific problem adds onto the already big pile of problems that iOS users have been having with the iOS 7.1.2 update. More specifically, users are still having issues with getting VPNs to work properly, as well as problems with the camera, iMessage, WiFi, and even battery life.

Of course, these issues aren’t affecting everyone, as plenty of users have also had a smooth update transition and are moving along great with iOS 7.1.2, including myself.

The iOS 7.1.2 update includes several fixes and improvements to a few things on iPhones and iPads. Most notably, the update fixes a big security flaw with email attachments in the Mail app where attachments weren’t properly encrypted in the past. The update also improves iBeacon connectivity and stability, as well as improved connectivity with third-party accessories.

If you haven’t updated yet, you can do so at your own risk by downloading and installing the update over-the-air with your iPhone or iPad by going into Settings > General > Software Update, or you can connect your iOS device to your computer and open up iTunes to download and install the update from there. The latter option is the best one if you plan to back up your iOS device before you update, just to be safe.

However, most users won’t notice a difference from iOS 7.1.1 to iOS 7.1.2. That’s mostly because the update doesn’t address any design changes or improvements. Rather, the update addresses a few things going on in the background that most users won’t notice in the first place.

The fixed security flaw with email attachments in the default Mail iOS app is probably the most noteworthy update. Attachments will now be correctly encrypted if you’re running iOS 7.1.2. However, users won’t notice anything different when sending and receiving emails that include attachments, so there’s nothing to worry about as far as how attachments are handled in the user interface.

Since iOS 7.1.2 is somewhat of a minor update, the performance improvements that come with it (if any) are minimal. There’s no mention of any kind of performance improvement in the release notes of iOS 7.1.2.

In the end, users shouldn’t be too worried about updating to iOS 7.1.2 right away unless you use the default Mail app as your email client, otherwise the update isn’t absolutely necessary. But of course, it never hurts to get your iPhone running the latest update just so that you have the latest bug fixes and improvements. I see no problem with iOS 7.1.2, so if you’re able to update to the latest version, there’s really no reason not to.

    No problems here. Updated just fine without interruptions, freezes or lags. Disappointed that there are no improvements to performance in this update, particularly for older devices. Sure, Apple released an update to improve performance on older devices, but it’s only made quite a minor difference. I’m assuming users of older devices will be locked out of iOS 8, which never seems fair – but this is obviously a good tactic for Apple to use, as they can almost bully users into buying their latest device!

    Mine froze midway through as reported in this article which is how I found this to begin with. I sure hope I’m not plagued with the other issues detailed above. I’ve always been such a huge fan of apple, but with declining battery life with every update and problems like this, I’m beginning to lose confidence.

    I have a problem that my emails are freezing so that I can’t open them. I can see the list of emails in my inbox but when i press on it they don’t open. Just updated this Morning and only realized now that this may be the cause. If I close and reopen or go to a different folder it corrects itself. It’s happened about 3 or 4 times today.

    The download went smoothly on my iphone 5, however numerous problems subsequently developed:
    1. Phone freezes frequently
    2. Battery life is down 50%
    3. One of my Apps will not work: LTM Calendar

    Kind of frustrating and I wish I can reverse the download

    iPhone 4s-nightmare-freezing, horrific battery life, losing phone signal. Had to do a hard reset 4 times today.

    Ever since updating, I can’t upload photos to Instagram, it just freezes up. Facebook crashed, as does Instagram.

    Tried the update. Phone is still frozen. Hard boot isn’t happening as the phone is totally locked up. Any suggestions other than a hammer?

    DONT DO IT! ONCE AGAIN, JOBS IS REACHING OUT FROM THE GRAVE TO TORMENT US! I installed 7.1.2 on my iPad, and it promptly deleted all of my calendars from iPad, iPhone, and iCloud. Thank God for a real operating system, MS Outlook on my PC saved part of the wreckage!

    I am having problems with my Safari and other internet using apps not working unless I am on Wifi since this update. Also Siri won’t sinc up with my Bluetooth radio like it did before this update. I’m sick and tired of these updates! I wish they would Stop being slow with the iPhone 6 and release it. I recently switched to the HTC One M8 because I don’t do the in between iPhones to me those are not that big of an upgrade and I am Sooooo Ready for a New smart phone gadget. I like the M8 but I Hate Android so I took it back. I said to myself oh well just have to wait for the iPhone 6 and atleast my iPhone 5 is still good! Until……. Dun… Dun…. Dun…….. I did the update yesterday!!!!

    I routinely email myself links from Safari on my iPhone as a reminder to look them up later on my laptop or phone.
    After the 7.1.2 update the mail from Safari shows up in my Sent box, but is not showing up in my Inbox, even with WiFi.

    I’ve had several apps not work with this update, including facebook, but perhaps most worrying is that my entire library of voicemails has been deleted. Yes, they are backed up in my iTunes on the computer, but that’s really no help as that doesn’t put them back on the phone. I rely on these recordings day to day so for me this is a very serious issue.

    5s frozen solid. white screen with apple logo. turns black or blue every once in a while then back to white screen. can’t connect to iTunes, can’t reset or power cycle. great :-(

    IOS update installed quite easily. No hiccups that I’m aware of with the installation, except that now my email is frozen as of 3 days ago. I can access any emails already on my phone, but it won’t load anything new since Wednesday (when I installed the update). I’ve tried the reboot, and resetting the Wi-Fi connection. Still stymied. :-(
    I know it isn’t the Wi-Fi because my iPod is still able to update my inbox and sent mail…

    Tried update today and it seemed to take too long. I had to go out so I took my phone with me and looked at it an hour or so later…no joy. I tried hard reboot and also no joy. Went all day without my phone working and was severely annoyed. Connected to iTunes when I got home and had to restore my phone. Once my phone came back up I checked my usage and 1.5GB of data had been used. Now I am really paying for this update!!!!!

    Update went okay but I can no longer get mobile reception on my phone where I had two bars before in the exact same location, and I mean exact. It’s like the update dumbed down the antenna. Seems like Apple is up to their old tricks of making your perfectly good device slowly more useless so you want to buy a new one. Next time mine won’t be an Apple though.

    I am having problem after the update. I cant find my APN SETTING it disappered and can’t find it anywhere my internet only works on wifi now this is disapointing :(

    I complained on here the other day about my problem I had after updating my iPhone 5, well the problem somehow worked it’s way out on it’s own. The only thing I did was backed up my iPhone 5 to my laptop then turned it off and left it off for at least 30 mins and turned it back on. After that I was able to use Safari and other data using apps without being connected to wifi along with my texts going through. Also Siri synced back up with my bluetooth radio and I was able to send hands free text like normal. Hope this info helps ya’ll out!

    For those who are having problems. I have been an iPhone beta tester and I am a developer as well. We run into tons of problems doing over-the-air updates in the iOS 7 beta tests. The problem has to do with certain database files that get corrupted in the iOS system directories. These databases contain, among other things, information about your iCloud account credentials and certificates used to validate your device to the servers. When the DB gets corrupted, it can cause issues with these services. We saw a lot of issues with iMessage for example.

    Here is a method that I found works well to resolve issues.

    Before you start, make sure you have at least as much free HDD space on your computer as your iPhone’s capacity. Ideally more. If you don’t, and you’re on Mac, then use the nifty app WhatSize on your Mac to find big files on your computer and delete them to free up space.

    STEP 1: back up any existing versions of important apps that are in your iTunes folder on your computer in /Users/You/Documents/iTunes/Mobile Applications/. (Time Machine already does this, so if you’re using that, then you should be fine, but I burn them off to Panasonic 50-year Archival Blu-Rays to protect them from ever getting purged as old data from my Time Machine drive. That way if a developer updates an app and it sucks, I can downgrade back to a previous version of that app.)

    OPTIONAL STEP: If you have a lot of photos and movies taking up space on your phone, I recommend that you download all the contents of your Camera Roll (photos and movies) to your computer, then create a second back up to Time Machine or an external drive, then delete them off of your phone. This will greatly speed up the backup/restore process (in the next steps).

    OPTIONAL STEP: If you have lots of big recorded data files in other apps, such as Garage Band recordings, etc., it will also speed up the backup/restore process to transfer them off of your device to your computer using iTunes file sharing or a third-party utility like PhoneView/iFunBox that lets you copy files in and out of application-specific directories on the iOS file system. (You can always put this data back later.)

    STEP 2: Connect the iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Right-click the device and select “Transfer Purchases”. Let that finish up. It can take awhile, especially if you’ve never done it before.

    STEP 3: Click “Back Up Now” under “Manually Back Ups and Restore” to create a full, current backup of your iPhone to iTunes on your computer. (If you don’t do this on a regular basis, now is the best time to start!) This takes a fair amount of time. It may take a really really long time if you have not done the OPTIONAL STEP(s) above and your iPhone has lots of data on it.

    STEP 4: Back up your latest back up, iOS apps, photos, etc. If you use Mac and have a Time Machine drive, then do “Back Up Now” from the Time Machine menu and wait until it completes. (That way if your HDD fails during the next step, you won’t lose all the data from your phone.) If you don’t use Time Machine and/or Mac, then find an alternate way to back up your iTunes backups. The easiest way is to simply copy the /Users/You/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ directory to an external volume (USB stick, hard drive) or burn it to Blu-Ray (this is the ideal solution since BD-R can last 50 years even through a major solar flare). (If you use iCloud Backup from your phone, this can also serve as a secondary backup, but I do not trust clouds. Clouds can evaporate.)

    STEP 5: Click “Restore iPhone…” and proceed. This will erase your iPhone and rebuild all databases, restoring everything to factory defaults.

    STEP 6: Set up your iPhone as a New iPhone. Enter your iCloud information and get yourself to the point where iMessage is working, phone is working, text messages are working. If they still aren’t working then you have a hardware problem with your phone: take it to Apple. But 99% chance these services will be working fine. Test it with your e-mail servers too if that was causing you some problems, just make sure to set up with IMAP and don’t delete things of your e-mail servers.

    STEP 7: Now, click “Restore Backup…” and restore the previous backup you made in STEP 3. This will start from the newly-rebuilt databases and import your settings from the previous backup. This takes awhile.

    STEP 8: Your phone should be working now. Use it. Don’t forget to make regular back-ups!

    Help, iPhone 5s problems with 7.1.2 with battery life and reception on 5s ?!? The same problems with BOTH our 5s phones! Any Fix?!?:

    After updating to the new 7.1.2 software, both of our 5s phones now have battery issues with draining the battery faster than ever and both phones now have reception issues in places where we have ALWAYS had good reception. The reception issues make it difficult to call out, sometimes losing service completely and dropped calls! It also of course affects iMessages and Text messages and all other connectivity apps and internet. Both 5s phones went from really good to really bad right after the 7.1.2 update. Please help. If you APPLE see this posting, please FIX ASAP as I have seen many other posts on the same issue and yes I ALREADY did the HOLD down power and HOME button and it did NOT fix anything. Thanks. My zip code area is 91320.

    My update went smoothly and I’ve not had a problem with text messages. However I can no longer transfer pictures to my PC. It’s a work phone and I use (used) this function (usb cable connected, then drag and drop) at least once a week, therefore very annoying.
    I’ve resorted to email, which is darn annoying when out of WiFi range & wastes mobile bandwith, but at least it’s not paid for out of my own pocket!

    The USB cable connection now brings up a “do you trust this computer” option. Pressing yes makes no difference as explorer and/or any other PC package is blocked from seeing any photos. For consistency I do get the silly “trust” option twice every time I try/fail.

    I just update to ios 7.1.2 and result my safari & appstore always crash. I don’t have any back up. How to fix this? please help…
