Apple Prepping 4K iMac, 12-Inch MacBook for October Launch

Surrounding the many Apple rumors already floating around, the company is said to be working on several new Mac products that could be launched in October.

The rumor mill is already working overtime to cope with all of the Apple rumors that have already sprung up over the last couple of months, including new details on the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, and the iPad mini 3. Plus, iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are also in the mix and we’ve already been hearing rumors about when those pieces of software will be released to the public.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is working on some kind of 4K desktop, which could either mean a new iMac with a high-resolution 4K display or an updated Thunderbolt display with a 4K resolution. The current resolution for both the 27-inch iMac and the Thunderbolt display sits at 2560 x 1440, but it’s said that Apple could be giving these products even higher resolutions come October.

As for the new 12-inch Macbook, it wasn’t said if it would be a new MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, but we’ve heard rumors in the past that Apple is expected to come out with a 12-inch MacBook Air at some point this year. The new machine will be equipped with a Retina display and will also have a thinner and lighter aluminum body.

These new Macs are said to be releasing alongside the public launch of OS X Yosemite, which is said to be releasing to the public at some point later in October, although a firm release date hasn’t been officially set yet, and there are currently no predictions as far as when we might see the new operating system release.

However, 9to5Mac reports that Apple is planning to release OS X Yosemite Developer Previews every two to three weeks over the course of the next couple of months until the company is said to release a final Developer Preview on September 29, with a Gold Master version expected to be released on October 10. This would put a final version on par for a late October launch.

OS X 10.10 Yosemite was announced and unveiled back in early June during Apple’s annual WWDC developers conference where the company showed off a slew of features that users can expect out of the new operating system.

This new version of OS X comes with some pretty sweet features, including an all-new look and feel that finally puts OS X on par with iOS 7, thanks to the translucent windows and menus, as well as a flatter design overall, with redesigned icons that mimic iOS 7 icons, but still include some depth so that there’s still a bit of that classic OS X feel.

Furthermore, OS X 10.10 Yosemite also comes improvements made to Messages, including the ability to send and receive SMS text messages (rather than just iMessages), as well as make and receive phone calls as long as your iPhone is nearby and can connect to your Mac.

OS X Yosemite also includes Handoff, which is a feature of AirDrop that finally adds cross-platform support between iOS and OS X, allowing users to send files through AirDrop to either iOS or Mac computers.

One of the first things that Apple touted on stage with the new OS X 10.10 Yosemite was the look of the new icons. They’ve obviously been iOS-ified and include a flatter design that we’ve seen on the iPhone and iPad, but they still have a bit of depth in order to keep the design from going completely iOS.

A public beta for OS X Yosemite will be arriving tomorrow for a lucky group of users who signed up to be a part of the program.
