With no Android 4.4.3 KitKat or Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates in sight, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update roll out continues in the United States with a major Galaxy S4 mini variant getting its bump from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 4.4.2 KitKat today.
Since January, Samsung has been rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat, Google’s latest Android update. And while some manufacturers have moved to newer versions of the Android 4.4 KitKat update, Android 4.4.3 KitKat and Android 4.4.4 KitKat to be specific, Samsung has been content with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, an older version of the software.
Samsung is currently rolling out a number of Galaxy Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates including Android 4.4.2 upgrades for the Galaxy Note 2 and variants of the Galaxy S4. Today, a new Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update has landed in the United States though it’s not Android 4.4.3 KitKat or Android 4.4.4 KitKat, it’s the same old Android 4.4.2 KitKat update.
Thanks to an update on Samsung’s software upgrade page, we know that the AT&T Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4.2 KitKat update is set to roll out starting today. It’s not clear what will be on board the device’s Android 4.4.2 KitKat update though we suspect that it will feature the same enhancements and fixes that arrived for AT&T’s regular Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Active earlier this year.
AT&T Galaxy S4 mini owners will want to be on the look out for the update going forward. To manually check for the update, head to Applications > Settings > About Phone > Software update > Check for update. If the update is available, there will be a prompt that starts the download and installation process. It’s not yet clear how big this update is.
The update follows in the footsteps of the Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates for Sprint, U.S. Cellular and Verizon, all of which were rolled out several weeks ago. The arrival of the AT&T Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4.2 KitKat update could mean that a roll out in other parts of the world, namely Canada, could be close behind.
Canadian carrier Rogers is typically not far behind AT&T when it comes to Android software updates and the carrier lists its Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4 KitKat update as “coming soon.”
This Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4.2 KitKat update is just one of several that are still missing in the United States. Specifically, we still haven’t seen the C Spire Galaxy S4 or MetroPCS Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates roll out and it’s not clear what those carriers have up their sleeve. Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates hit major Galaxy S4 variants in the U.S. many months ago.
Carriers in Australia are still promising their remaining Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades for August though new Android update schedule releases for Vodafone and Optus don’t guarantee updates for the month of August. We simply haven’t seen any movement in the past few weeks and users shouldn’t feel confident about imminent upgrades.
As we’ve pointed out, things could be worse. Fellow Aussie carrier Telstra still hasn’t confirmed a Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade even though it’s now listing update releases through September.
It’s not clear where the Galaxy S4 goes from here. Earlier this month, we spotted a Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.3 KitKat update in testing at an Australian carrier though it’s not clear when or if it will roll out. We’ve also seen Samsung announce that its upcoming Galaxy Alpha will arrive with Android 4.4.4 KitKat on board.
While those leave the door open for Android 4.4.3 KitKat or Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates for older devices, it’s possible that Samsung will opt to skip them for Google’s brand new Android L update that’s expected to arrive later this year.
