How to Upgrade iOS 8 beta to iOS 8 Public Release

If you are using the iOS 8 beta or iOS 8 GM you can upgrade to the full version of iOS 8 without downgrading to iOS 7, but you will need to manually upgrade to the iOS 8 release on your devices.

If you are still on the iOS 8 beta it’s a good idea to upgrade to the official iOS 8 release as soon as possible. For users trying the iOS 8 GM, there is less of a rush, but it is still a good idea to get back on to the latest official updates from Apple.

You can upgrade from the iOS 8 beta to the iOS 8 public release without any issues and you can even avoid a lengthy restore if you want to make the iOS 8 upgrade quickly.

You need a computer with iTunes, a charging cable and a little more time than a typical iOS 8 update to make this work. You cannot start this until the iOS 8 release time on September 17th, but you can prepare for the process now.]

If you are on an iOS 8 beta, you should upgrade to the iOS 8 release right away, as the iOS 8 betas expire at a specific date in the future. The iOS 8 GM does not expire like the betas, but it is still a good idea to upgrade while you are thinking about it.

How to Upgrade from iOS 8 Beta to iOS 8 Final

Before you can start you need to find the official iOS 8 download for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. There are specific iOS 8 updates for a variety of models and you need to right one or this will not work. If you are an iOS developer you can get this from Apple in the Developer Center.

For users who installed the iOS 8 GM free or paid to try the iOS 8 beta, you should be able to find the official iOS 8 downloads on IMZDL and other websites in the afternoon after the iOS 8 release. It will take a few hours before options arrive, so plan on this taking place later in the day.

1. Download the iOS 8 official release .ipsw.

2. Plug your iPhone or iPad into a computer and open iTunes.

3. Perform a backup just to be safe.

4. In iTunes click on the iPhone option in the upper right. If you see the Restore and Upgrade options you are on the right screen.

5. Special Click on Check for Update. A special click involves holding a key while you left click.

  • Hold alt/option on Mac when you click Check for Update.
  • On Windows, hold Shift when you click Check for Update.

6. Find the iOS 8 download and click on the .ipsw file.

7. Let the iOS 8 update complete. This can take 15 minutes or longer depending on how long it takes to verify the update with Apple’s servers.

After the iPhone or iPad update completes you will be running the full and official iOS 8 release on your device. If you need to do this on more than one device make sure you select the right .ipsw file.

    Wait , okay so I downloaded ios 8 gm like sometime last week . Do I have to download this to be on the official ios 8 which is being release tomorrow . Is this the right way to do it ? I don’t want to mess up my iPod . Please let me know

    @chris n. When the update comes out tomorrow the website mentioned above will have the update which you have to download. Then plug in your iPod, shift click of you’re on windows or option/alt click on check for updates and from there choose the file you downloaded and it should update you

    I am on iOS 8 Beta 5. On the 17th will I get the update via OTA?

      Well like I said you’d have to download the update from a website and I’m pretty sure links would be available shortly after the release. It’s the only way you can do it. I also have the beta 5 and we have to wait maybe an hour after the release. Hope you understand.

        I understand now. I think I’ll erase all data and with setup assistant I’ll restore from my iCloud backup which is right before I went ios8 beta. Then do the OTA. As I don’t have access to a Pc or Mac. Does that sound like a alternate path?? Thank you so much for replying promptly. “)

    You can always just wipe and restore with iCloud then update iOS 8 OTA but the only problem with that is if you received any new text messages or any new contacts when on iOS 8 beta then those will be lost.
