iPhone 6 Plus: 5 Things I learned on the First Day

An in-depth iPhone 6 Plus review requires a lot of use to test the first iPhone with a huge screen, but in just the first day there are five things that stand out about the iPhone 6 with a 5.5-inch screen.

The iPhone 6 Plus is big, but like the Galaxy Note 3 I also use it’s not too big to use. Yes, some users may need bigger pockets and to learn how to hold the iPhone 6 Plus, but overall this is an upgraded iPhone experience that many users will enjoy.

Using the iPhone 6 Plus feels new and different, while the iPhone 6 feels very much like the iPhone 5s. The best comparison was that, “yeah this is right,” feeling when I first used the iPad mini. The screen size is going in a different direction, but it still feels like this size makes sense and the iPhone 6 design completes the upgrade.

Here's what I learned after using the iPhone 6 Plus for a day.

It is hard to find an iPhone 6 Plus in stock now, and iPhone 6 Plus orders are shipping in several weeks, but you can stop in to many carrier stores to use the iPhone 6 Plus for yourself.

Here are five things I learned about the iPhone 6 Plus in the first day, after upgrading from the iPhone 5s. I also bought an iPhone 6, so you’ll get a little of that iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus comparison in here as well.

Hands, Pockets and Use

The iPhone 6 Plus is a big phone, but it’s not impossible to hold and use even with average size hands. I don’t use the iPhone 6 Plus with one-hand often, but in situations where I need to and I am not moving a lot the Reachability feature is useful. A double tap on the home button lowers the top half of the screen so I can tap on something without adjusting my grip.

Two hands are best, but you can use the device with one hand when you need to.

The iPhone 6 Plus fits in my pockets, but I would not want to take it for a run without a huge armband. The best use come with two hands, when you can almost use it like a smaller iPad mini.

You’ll need to make your own call on the right screen size, but don’t be scared to try the iPhone 6 Plus just because it comes with a big screen and a bigger frame.

The Screen is Amazing

Users need to adapt to the larger iPhone 6 Plus display.

This is not the best looking mobile display I’ve used, but the iPhone 6 display is amazing. The 5.5-inch display finally delivers a 1080P HD canvas for web surfing, movies, apps and games.

Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus screen quality looks great and clips of an iTunes purchase look very nice, but I wish there was a multi-window option like on the Galaxy Note 3. Landscape support is interesting and I really like the new landscape keyboard on the iPhone 6 Plus. The new landscape keyboard includes arrow keys and shortcuts to copy and past.

The iPhone 6 Plus includes special features that take advantage of the larger screen.

The LG G3 display still looks better and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Galaxy Note 4 does as well, but we’re talking about screens being better, not one screen being bad by any means.

iPhone 6 Plus Apps are Not Easy to Find

There are not a lot of iPhone 6 Plus apps, which means the phone expands the app to fit the bigger screen. This works, and it is better than using black bars, but it changes the keyboard placement and it doesn’t look as sharp as apps that are designed for the 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and the larger display.

Not all apps look great on the iPhone 6 Plus.

So far many apps I use daily like Gmail, Google Hangouts and many other don’t fully support the iPhone 6 Plus. The apps still run, so you aren’t missing out, but the experience suffers.

Hopefully the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus apps arrive in the App Store soon.

iPhone 6 Plus Battery Life is Impressive

A day of use right out of the box isn’t a great test of the iPhone 6 Plus battery life, but it’s already clear that this phone lasts longer than the iPhone 5s. I used the phone a lot for setting up accounts, downloading apps, filming an iPhone 6 setup guide and uploading it to YouTube as well as an hour or more of phone calls and there is barely a dent in the battery. I’ll be back with a better iPhone 6 battery test, but early results are promising.

iPhone 6 Plus Camera

The iPhone 6 Plus camera is fast and it pulls in more light than the iPhone 5s did, delivering better looking photos in less than ideal light. I’m still looking for amazing uses for the Optical Image Stabilization, but you can see one comparison below, showing sunset with the iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus.

Optical Image Stabilization doesn’t help with photos of moving objets like pets, but the new Focus Pixels and sensor do a good job of capturing our two Toy Poodles. You can see those iPhone 6 Plus sample photos below.
