iPhone 6 Camera Comparison Shows How Far We’ve Come

It really doesn’t need to be said that the iPhone’s camera has improved over the years since the original iPhone debuted in 2007, but how much better has the camera gotten exactly? The latest iPhone camera comparison shows us just how much.

Tap Tap Tap, the developer studio behind the popular iPhone camera app Camera+, posted a solid camera comparison between all of the iPhone models that have ever existed (except for the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 6 Plus, since they both have the same camera as other models included). The comparison is rather in-depth and takes a unique approach compared to some other comparisons that we’ve seen in the past.

The company pitted eight generations of iPhones up against each other and had them all take the same photo (or relatively the same photo), and put them side-by-side so that you can easily tell the difference between each generation. The results are quite stunning, and it gives you a better idea of just how far the iPhone has come in camera technology.

Just scrolling through the first few photo comparisons shows just how awful the first two iPhone generations were at taking photos compared to the models that released afterward. The original iPhone and the iPhone 3G both are horrible at taking macro photos and produce a ton of noise compared to the other iPhones.

Of course, as you get up into the last few iPhone generations, the differences become more minuscule as it approaches the end of Moore’s Law, but the side-by-side comparison still allows you to see the differences between the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, and the iPhone 6.

This is probably one of the most comprehensive iPhone camera comparisons that we’ve seen. However, it’s important to note that these photos were unsurprisingly taken with Camera+ instead of the default Camera app on the iPhones, most likely allowing for slightly better photos on each device, thanks to the added features, but the differences in the photo quality between the iPhone models still remains quite clear.

The iPhone 6 was released last week and it arrived with a ton of new features, most notable an all-new design and a larger screen. However, the camera saw some improvements as well, including a better f/2.2 aperture, as well as faster autofocus.

Perhaps the biggest new camera feature that was introduced is the optical image stabilization on the iPhone 6 Plus, in which the sensor literally moves around to compensate for camera shake in order to make photos as crisp as possible and cut down on blurriness. The iPhone 6 only has digital image stabilization, which simply uses the iPhone’s processor to prevent blurry photos when the user isn’t holding the device steady.

Of course, the iPhone 6 can still take better photos, but it seems like if image stabilization is a huge feature for you, the iPhone 6 Plus might be up your alley.

In addition to this, the iPhone 6’s camera can now shoot full 1080p video at 60 frames per second, as well as record slo-mo video at 240 frames per second (compared to 120 frames per second with the iPhone 5s). Plus, the iPhone 6 can now easily record time-lapse video without any help from third-party apps.

Other features include improved face detection, easier exposure controls for better lightning, and higher-quality panorama photos that can go as high as 43 megapixels, which is insane.

Perhaps the most minor, yet amazing feature is a timer mode, which allows you to set it to 3 seconds or 10 seconds and then have it automatically take a photo. This allows you to set the iPhone somewhere on a pedestal and then squeeze in with a group of friends in order to get that perfect photo without straining your arm as you hold the phone out in front of you.
