GameStop Preps for Holiday 2014 Deals

America’s largest gaming retailer isn’t wasting time as it prepares for the holiday shopping season and beyond. GameStop is seeking to build a bit of momentum for the Holiday 2014 shopping  season with a deal that gets users extra games and accessories at absolutely no additional charge – provided they’re members of its Power Up Rewards Plus program.

GameStop revealed the pre-holiday benefits changes for its PowerUp Rewards Pro members in a press release early this morning. When users purchase any two games and have a PowerUp Rewards Pro membership they’ll get a new coupon code on their receipt that allows them to purchase another game for free within 90 days. The three games users purchase must be of the traded-in variety.

Power Up Rewards

That’s it, there’s no other hoops to jump through. Of course, having a PowerUp Rewards Pro membership is a giant hurdle of its own. PowerUp Rewards Pro is an upgraded version of the loyalty card program that GameStop launched some time ago. Initially, having a PowerUp Rewards membership allowed you to save on some games and get free copies of GameInformer. PowerUp Rewards Pro is a new membership tier that users pay to be a part of. For $14.99 a month PowerUp Rewards Pro users get 10% extra trade-in value for every game they sell back to GameStop. GameStop also gives PowerUp Rewards Plus members 10% discounts on strategy guides, pre-owned games and pre-ordered accessories.

In addition to these benefits GameStop says it’ll offer PowerUp Rewards Pro members $50 worth of offers to take advantage of during the month of October. Until October 12th, GameStop is boosting the trade-in value of everything it sells by $50 so that users can pick up Sony’s PS Vita gaming console on the cheap. It’s also slashing the price of used smartphones it sells by $50 from October 8th to October 31st. The company began selling used smartphones and tablets like Apple’s iPhone and iPad in its stores last year.

It’s worth noting that every purchase made with a PowerUp membership earns users credits that they can redeem for trinkets and extra deals on the PowerUp website. With a PowerUp Pro membership users get bonus credits for every purchase too.

Even as we sit comfortably at the beginning of October, now is the right time to start planning for Holiday 2014. At least, now is the time to start planning for those who plan on making serious gaming purchases this winter. Doing the leg work now could save big money on the cost of a Xbox One, Nintendo Wii U or Sony PS4 during some Holiday 2014 sales. For example, this week’s deal gives users $50 off the cost of an Xbox One or PS4. It alone would be a steal if GameStop wasn’t also requiring users to purchase the coupon for the deal from its Rewards store with points. As we get closer and closer to the holiday season expect more deals like this one to materialize at other retailers.

Right now the Xbox One costs $399 for a bundle that doesn’t include the Kinect 2 sensor. Another version that does include the Kinect 2 sensor costs $499. Sony’s PS4 console costs $399. Overall, the cost of getting into the next generation of living room game is a bit cheaper than it has been in the past, but that’s only on the surface. Both consoles require that users have a membership to their own subscription service before they’re allowed to play against their friends online. For the Xbox One that’s another $9.99 a month or $60 a year. For PS4 users that’s $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year.

Correction in your article, a Power Up Rewards Pro membership is only $14.99 a year, not a month.
