iOS 8 Jailbreak Made iOS 8 More Secure, Says Apple

Published

on

iOS 8.1.1 released this week, arriving with a handful of bug fixes and performance improvements mostly for the older iPhone 4s and the iPad 2. However, one big change that most users didn’t see was that the latest update patched up the new iOS 8 jailbreak.

The iOS 8 jailbreak was released last month shortly after iOS 8.1 was launched to the public, and it allowed iPhone and iPad users to jailbreak their devices on the latest iOS software. However, Apple is usually quick on the draw to patch up the exploits used, and indeed they did with iOS 8.1.1.

While jailbreaking allows users to modify their iPhones and iPads and make it device of their own of sorts, Apple looks at it as an opportunity to make iOS more secure. For instance, Apple recently posted a support page explaining the security behind its iOS 8.1.1 update, and the company gives credit to the Pangu dev team for making iOS 8 more secure.

Apple gives a shout-out to the Pangu team for discovering three vulnerabilities that were patched in 8.1.1. This isn’t the first time that Apple has openly gave credit to jailbreak developers, as the company has given shout-outs to the Evad3rs team for past jailbreak releases, but what’s interesting is that while Apple despises that users jailbreak their device, the company also takes that opportunity to make iOS more secure by patching up exploits that other users have found.

Apple patching up iOS 8.1.1 isn’t really too surprising, as Apple has been known to patch up jailbreak exploits with the next iOS update.

As for the update itself, it seems to be a very minor update for newer device owners, but iPhone 4s and iPad 2 users should see some improvements.

Up until today’s update, many iPhone 4s and iPad 2 users have had to put matters into their own gadget-wielding hands in an effort to increase performance on the aging devices. Usually the biggest culprits for sluggish performance on older iPhones are the animations and pretty effects that make iOS 8 look really good.

However, if you have an older iPhone, they’re only making things worse. Your iPhone 4s’s processor probably can’t keep up with everything that’s going on, so it’s usually a good idea to turn off animations and get rid of those pretty effects.

Even with today’s update, we’d recommend changing these settings to speed up your older iDevice.

You can navigate to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion. Tapping on Reduce Motion will open up another screen with a toggle switch that you’ll flip on.

This feature turns off parallax effect. The parallax effect is turned on by default and was a new feature introduced on iOS 7 that gives the home screen a neat 3D look, so when you move your phone around in your hand while keeping your head still, it looks like you’re looking “around” the app icons onto the wallpaper, almost like you’re looking through a windows out into the iOS 7 world. But it’s really nothing more than the OS and the gyroscope/accelerometer working together to create such an illusion.

While it isn’t that impressive, it’s something that’s cool at first, but users can quickly get bored with. Plus, it’s even more annoying knowing that it hogs up processing resources, thus decreasing battery life.
