Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Update Starts Rolling Out

Published

on

The Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update is finally rolling out to owners of the aging former flagship as it takes the device from Android 5.0 Lollipop to a newer version of the software that delivers bug fixers for several Android 5.0 Lollipop problems.

Last month, Google finally started rolling out the Nexus Android 5.0 Lollipop update it promised to Nexus users back in June. The company started pushing its Android 5.0 Lollipop update to select Nexus device and by the end of November, the update landed for the Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10.

Android 5.0 Lollipop brought new features to Nexus users but it also delivered a series of Android 5.0 Lollipop problems. Nexus users were extremely vocal about the issues plaguing their devices and fortunately, Google was paying attention. Earlier this month, Google pushed out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, a bug fix update aimed directly at Android 5.0 Lollipop problems. The update landed for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 10, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and the Nexus 7 2013.

Last Friday, Google surprised Nexus 7 2012 users with an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update release into the AOSP. At the time, the update was a bit mysterious but over time, the update has revealed itself to be a bug fix update for Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi users. Just a short time ago, Google started pushing out the Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update OTA, delivering bug fixes for Android 5.0 Lollipop problems to those still rocking Google’s aging 7-inch slate.

Google’s OTA roll outs typically take a week or so to complete. So while some users have already received the update, others will likely be waiting until next week or the new year for the upgrade to Android 5.0.2. Google’s roll outs are random and unpredictable so there is no way to determine when the update will land for a device.

To check for the OTA, Nexus 7 users should head into the device’s settings and manually check for the software. If it’s available, the device will prompt the download process. Those who don’t want to continually check for software can simply sit back and wait for the notification to arrive. The installation process should take a few minutes for those already on Android 5.0 and more than 10 minutes for those currently on Android 4.4 KitKat.

Those with the ability to sideload Android software can now pull the update from Google’s servers. Those who don’t know anything about the process are encouraged to wait for the OTA to arrive. Sideloading often causes installation problems and initial complaints about Android updates tend to come from those experiencing issues after sideloading.

Thanks to the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop developer change log, we know that the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update comes with several bug fixes including fixes for storage and alarm problems. For now, the update is limited to the Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi though Google still owes the cellular versions of the Nexus 7 Android 5.0 Lollipop updates so it’s possible that we’ll see Android 5.0.2 roll out to the cellular models in the near future. It’s not clear if other Nexus devices, including the Nexus 5 and Nexus 4, will make the move up from Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Nexus 7 users still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat are going to get Android 5.0’s new features. Android 5.0 Lollipop is a massive upgrade to the Android operating system and it brings tons of changes along with it. The software comes packed with Google’s brand new Material Design, changes to the lock screen, big upgrades to the Notification system, a new battery saver tool, and more.

Google’s rumored to have an Android 5.1 update in the works for early next year though an Android 5.1 release remains unconfirmed. With Android 5.0.2 Lollipop live and the new year getting closer, the Nexus 7 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update will likely be the last Android update this year.

I got to 5.0 from 4.4 by OTA. I think I will wait for the same when I go to 5.0.2. And by the way – whoever unleashed 5.0 on the public without testing it first should be horse whipped. Its been a month or more I have had to put up with 5.0. I am not a happy camper.

I have the 2012 Nexus 7 WiFi. After 5.0 it no longer works. It is a paperweight now. It as if somebody installed dialup to my tablet. I hope 5.0.2 fixes it.

Just updated to 5.0.2 on my old Nexus 7 and the performance is outstanding. After I upgraded to 5.0, the tablet was worthless. Basically a big paper weight. Glad to see that Google was responsive to their customers, but, they better do a better job in the quality assurance department going forward.

We have two Nexus 7 2012 WiFi that are also still stuck on KitKat. I know updates roll out in phases but this shows they don’t care about their customers with Lollipop. Some Nexus 7’s 2012 and 2013, even mine never got 5.0 (My Nexus 7 2013 has been on 5.0.1 for about four weeks but this poor service can’t happen again)! Shape up Google!

Those of you wanting to update your Nexus 7 2012 to 5.0.2, don’t bother. Resist the change. Mine is running 5.0.2 and it is running (if you can call it that) like a dog with two broken back legs. It’s not what I call a brick, but it is so slow, so frustrating to use. I’m going to take it back to 4.4 of something earlier, that 5.x.x.
