Moto DROID Turbo Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Imminent

Published

on

The Motorola DROID Turbo was announced and released back in October, shortly after Google debuted the next version of Android. Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop update is still slowly but surely heading to more devices, and that includes an array of smartphones from Motorola. They were among the first manufacturers to push an update out to devices, for the Moto X Pure Edition and new Moto G, and now we’re hearing the Turbo could be next.

Android L was first announced as Android 4.4 KitKat’s successor back in June during the company’s annual Google I/O developer event. Then in October Google officially unveiled the full Android 5.0 Lollipop update along with the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 tablet, and a new Nexus Player for the TV. Soon after Motorola made some announcements, and they were among the first to update smartphones too.

Currently the newish Motorola DROID Turbo is running a nearly stock version of Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and has seen a few updates from Verizon already, but another is coming soon which very well could be the DROID Turbo Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Here’s what we know so far.

The Droid Turbo camera can take great photos, but it isn't always reliable.

Back in December reports and rumors surfaced that a new software update was in the final testing phase for the DROID Turbo, and many assumed this would be Android 5.0 Lollipop. However, it arrived a few days later and was only a bug fixing update, and delivered a few new features. Android 5.0 Lollipop was missing in action.

Fast forward to this week, and another DROID Turbo update is being tested over at the Motorola forums which many know as the Motorola Feedback Network. They use this to push software updates ahead of the main release to select users in order to fully test an update before delivering it to the public. Then an update follows for all owners within days if testing goes as planned.

Today Droid-Life received word that the Motorola Feedback Network is ready to begin testing a “new software release” for the DROID Turbo, and are asking for volunteers to try it before releasing it to the public. Now this could just be a bug fixing update, especially considering the Moto X hasn’t seen Android 5.0.1 Lollipop from carrier variants in the United States.

The Turbo update in December delivered some fixes, VoLTE, HD voice calling and a few other things, so the next logical update is Android 5.0 Lollipop. That being said, they could also have a few bugs to squash and some things to fix before pushing Android 5.0 Lollipop out at a later date. Until the soak test for feedback members actually starts rolling out, we can’t say for sure.

When Android 4.4 KitKat was announced Verizon was the first carrier to update a device to Google’s latest release, and that was for its new Moto X. This was a surprise move as Verizon is usually one of the last carriers to updates, but it’s strong partnership with Motorola has been paying off for owners.

There is a single speaker on the front of the Droid Turbo, but that's powerful enough.

At this time it’s unclear if the Motorola DROID Turbo “new software release” that’s about to start being tested by users at the Motorola forums is Android 5.0 Lollipop, but with emails going out, the wait should only be a few hours, or a few days at most. We’ve heard a lot of complaints that the VoLTE update in December is causing issues, so this also could just be a bug fixing update.

We’d urge owners to not get their hopes up just yet, but stay tuned because the moment we know more details we’ll be sure to update. The DROID Turbo is Verizon’s flagship Motorola device, and one surely they’d like to update to Android 5.0 Lollipop first.
