The Moto G is one of the best price to performance smartphones around, so much in fact that it’s Motorola’s most popular smartphone ever released. It offers an impressive design and wallet-friendly price that anyone can accept. With that, many who own one are first time smartphone buyers with lots of questions. Here we’ll explain how to insert or change the SIM card on the Moto G.

For a low price of only $179 with no contracts required, the 5-inch Moto G offers a lot to consumers, or even the smaller original Moto G from 2013. Its design and price made it popular, and now that millions of users own one we’re getting asked lots of questions. Great screen and nice dual front facing speakers aside, here’s how to do a task many will need to do once they get their new phone.

If you bought the impressive Moto G unlocked for the stunningly low price of $179, it likely won’t come with a SIM card which is what you’ll need from your carrier to get service, data, internet, and use the smartphone. Many pre-paid options have it installed already, and if you need to add a new SIM card, here’s how.

These days most smartphone either have two ways they’ve been designed. Either with a removable back like most Samsung smartphones which is where the SIM card (or micro-SD storage card) are located and can be swapped, or they have a little SIM card removal tool and a slot on the side or top of the device.

The iPhone, Moto X, HTC One M8 and more all have non-removable backs so the SIM card needs to be accessed with a little tray on the side of the device. Oddly enough, the Moto G doesn’t have one of these, and it doesn’t look like it has a removable back. Samsung and LG devices have a little lip or notch where you can grab to pull apart the phone and access the back, but the Moto G doesn’t. This is what confuses buyers and first-time owners, but you can simply pull the back off.

Instructions

Whether you just got the Moto G from an online purchase like Amazon or Motorola.com, or chose to buy the impressive phone for its low price and need to add your SIM card, we have you covered. There’s no removal tool, and no notch to pull apart the back.

Simply turn the phone over and use your fingernail to pull the back of the phone off starting from the micro-USB charging port. This is the easiest way, and you’ll easily be able to remove the back. It snaps off, and snaps right back on. See the image below.

Once you’ve yanked the back off you’ll notice the SIM slot near the top left. If a SIM card is already inside simply push it in more, and it will unclick and come out, you don’t just pull it out. Now add your new SIM card you received from T-Mobile, MetroPCS, or whoever else, snap the back cover back on and you’re all set.

It’s worth noting that Motorola also offers multiple different colors for the plastic back cover of the Moto G. Meaning if you have the white model like we do, you can buy pink, purple, green, blue or many other different options to give it a more unique and personalized look.

The back doesn’t appear to come off, but it does with ease. This was oddly a question we’ve received from countless owners of the Moto G, and now you know. Add a SIM and start enjoying that phone. In the meantime, expect an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop soon if you haven’t received it already.
