We’ve recently been getting questions about adding custom ringtones for each individual contact, or specific friends and family on your device. Below we’ll quickly explain just how easy this is to do. We’ve explained how to do this in general on Android, but below is specific instructions for the Galaxy S5, and the same steps will work with almost all Samsung Galaxy smartphones or tablets. The options may look slightly different, but are all in the same general area.

First off you’ll want to add certain songs or MP3’s to your device you’d like to use, and the tutorial at the top of the page will teach you how to create ringtones from your own music collection. Once you’ve done this, the new ringtones will be in the location already thanks to the apps from the tutorial, and then just to head into any contact you’d like to customize, and set a custom ringtone to make things more personal.

Instructions

With Samsung’s TouchWiz interface this is actually extremely easy. Not only can you set custom ringtones for each individual contact, but you can set custom sounds for text messages as well. It’s all rather easy, and here’s how.

Head into the dialer app and scroll down til you find the contact you’d like to edit and select it. From here you’ll see all that persons information. At the top is a Star, a Pen (edit button) and 3 dots for the settings menu. Tap the pen-shaped icon to edit the contact as shown below.

Once you’ve done this simply look down past the name, phone number, email and other information and you’ll see an option near the bottom called “Ringtone” select this. It will be set to the same default sound you’ve chosen in settings > sounds > ringtones which is the sound for all users, but by going into this directly from the contact, you can select a certain ringtone that will only play when that person calls.

Once you’ve tapped ringtone in the contacts edit page you’ll be greeted with a popup of all your ringtone sounds. From here simply scroll through the list until you’ve found the song or sound you’d like to use, check it, and hit OK. If the ringtone you made isn’t listed hit “Add” and find it in your device storage, then select it. And you’re all done. That’s it.

You’ve now successfully applied a specific ringtone for one individual contact on your Galaxy S5. All other incoming calls with use the default sound from settings, and any contact you customize will have their own tune. This is a great way to make things more personal, not to mention you’ll know who’s calling without ever looking at your phone. That way you won’t have to get up if you already know it isn’t an important call from a friend or family member.

It’s worth noting the Galaxy S5 is currently busy getting an update to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop around the globe and in the US, and these settings options may look slightly different after the update. Don’t worry though, you can still select custom contact ringtones. For even more details on your phone, check out our Galaxy S5 How to Portal. Enjoy.

Mine has the custom text and ring tones set in the contacts and was working. It suddenly stopped using anything but the default notification sound. Ring tones are unaffected

  2. will this work for text messages as well from that contact, or just phone calls?

I want to create a distinctive sound just for all text messages from any contact and not for all notifications. Can I do this.
