How to Cancel Cable the Easy Way

Published

on

You may remember last year’s fiasco with Comcast when a user tried to cancel his service, but instead took a trip to hell. This is pretty common with cable providers and internet service providers, but there’s one trick that you can use to cancel cable with ease.

If you want to cancel your cable subscription because you’re switching providers or simply just doing some cord-cutting, calling up customer support and telling them that you want to cancel isn’t as easy as you would hope to expect. When you call to cancel your service, you’ll usually be transferred to the company’s retention department where the representative will ask you questions as to why you’re cancelling your service and they will try to get you to stay, most likely by offering discounts.

However, if you want to avoid that whole mess altogether and simply just have your service cancelled without any questions asked, here’s how to do it.

The biggest reason why cable companies nag you and beg you to stay with them is usually because you tell them that you’re switching to a competing cable company. Customer service representatives will try to get you to stay by offering discounts or just persuading you to stay on board.

However, if you’re dead set on cancelling your current cable subscription, telling them that you’re switching to a competing company is an open invitation for them to try and get you to stay, and they won’t take “no” for an answer.

The good news is that you don’t need to tell them the real reason why you want to cancel your cable. Instead, the trick is to give them a reason that they can’t question.

Reasons like “I’m moving out of the country” or I’m moving to an area that Comcast doesn’t support” are great reasons to give as to why you’re cancelling your cable service. From there, you shouldn’t be hassled any further. Personally, I always say that I’m moving out of the country, because if you tell them you’re moving to an area that isn’t supported by Comcast, they may ask you where you’re moving to, and if you’re not sure what areas aren’t served by Comcast, you might be in for a longer phone call than expected.

Essentially, though, it’s a reason that makes the cancellation something that’s out of your hands, and there’s really nothing the representative can do to try and persuade you from not cancelling. I’ve done this a few times and immediately the customer support rep would begin the cancellation process without asking any further questions.

Of course, your mileage may vary, but providing a reason like this doesn’t give the representative a lot to work with and will be forced to just cancel your service with no questions asked.

Getting rid of cable can save you a lot of money in the long run. While cable subscriptions are still alive and well, more and more households are making the switch to cutting the cable and relying on streaming services. Cable certainly isn’t cheap (although some cable providers are making it cheaper with basic bundles), and while it will always have its advantages no matter what, users are pondering just how advantageous it is and whether or not it’s worth it in the long run.

With the wealth of movie and TV show streaming services available, it’s becoming cheaper to watch any of your favorite shows anytime you want. Gone are the days of needing a cable subscription to watch a TV show or movie that isn’t airing on local channels.
