iOS 8.4 Release Date: What We Know So Far

Published

on

As we push deeper into the month of May, we push closer and closer to the start of WWDC 2015 and an iOS 8.4 release for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Apple still isn’t talking about the iOS 8.4 release date but we have seen the company make progress. With that in mind, we want to take a look at what we know about the iOS 8.4 release including details about iOS 9 and the company’s upcoming music service.

Weeks ago, Apple confirmed an iOS 8.4 release with the release of its first iOS 8.4 beta update, iOS 8.4 beta 1. The first iOS 8.4 beta confirmed the existence of iOS 8.4 and it also confirmed some of the new features coming with the update. The iOS 8.4 beta release did not, however, confirm an iOS 8.4 release date for the public. Apple’s saving that announcement for another day.

As we’ve pushed away from the initial iOS 8.4 beta release, the iOS 8.4 release date has been inching closer and closer. We know this thanks to the release of an iOS 8.4 beta 2 for developers, an iOS 8.4 beta for the public, and iOS 8.4 rumors that have started pinpointing specific information about the incoming iOS 8 update. We still don’t have the full picture but Apple’s next update is starting to come together.

May figures to be a busy month for Apple, for iOS, and for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users around the world. June should be as well, especially if Apple decides to announce an iOS 9 release on stage next to an Apple TV as some rumors suggest. With that in mind, we want to take a look at everything we know about the iOS 8.4 update. Here’s what you need to know about the iOS 8.4 update, iOS 8.4 release date and iOS 9 as we push into the year.

iOS 8.4 Release Date

Apple isn’t talking about the iOS 8.4 release date just yet but according to new reports, the company is starting to wind down development of its latest iOS 8 update.

According to 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman, the iOS 8.4 release date won’t be coming in May. Nor will it be coming in early June. Instead, it looks like the iOS 8.4 release date for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch will arrive sometime after the start of WWDC 2015 on June 8th. This falls in line with early iOS 8.4 release date rumors that hinted at a release during the summer.

It appears that the company is starting to put the finishing touches on the iOS 8.4 update though it’s not expected to arrive for iOS 8 users until late June. A specific date hasn’t been called out though it looks like it won’t come before June 8th, the start of WWDC. The software is expected to arrive alongside a new version of iTunes, iTunes 12.2.

What this means is that we’re likely to see more iOS 8.4 beta updates arrive for developers and the public as Apple works to ensure a smooth transition from iOS 8.3 to iOS 8.4.

iOS 8.4 Features

It appears that the late iOS 8.4 release date could be a product of Apple’s ambitious new Beats Music service that will reportedly arrive at WWDC 2015 in some capacity.

A new report Billboard claims that Apple is “going down to the wire” and that it doesn’t have the necessary licensing deals in place in the buildup to WWDC 2015. According to one source “June won’t be the release date” because the deals aren’t done. The report says that Apple could still pull the deals off though it appears as though it will be cutting it close.

Gurman believes that Apple is still planning to showcase its new Beats Music service at WWDC 2015 and that the company is currently planning to push the service out in late June with iOS 8.4. The service could arrive in a beta in and around its announcement at the WWDC 2015 keynote. So while there is certainly some back and forth going on, it does look like iOS 8.4, at the very least, will bring fixes and a new Music app to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users next month.

The WWDC 2015 dates are confirmed and Apple will stream parts of the event.

iOS 8.4 is laying the groundwork for Apple’s streaming music service. The update’s big change is a revamped Music application that comes with a number of new enhancements, some of which have apparently been held from view in the buildup to WWDC. Gurman notes that some of the big changes to iTunes Radio don’t appear in the current iOS 8.4 beta.

Apple’s iOS 8.4 update is also important because it will likely serve as a main bridge to the iOS 9 release. An iOS 8.5 update doesn’t appear to be in the cards for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. At least not yet.

iOS 9 Release

It appears that WWDC will also serve as the launch pad for Apple’s upcoming iOS 9 update. According to Gurman, the company is starting to invest more time into its next big iOS release as it preps the software ahead of a launch at WWDC.

Apple hasn’t confirmed an iOS 9 launch at WWDC though all signs point in that direction. In its press release for WWDC 2015, Apple states that “at WWDC, Apple’s renowned developer community will come together to learn about the future of iOS.” The statement doesn’t mention iOS 9 by name but it’s a sign that we’ll probably see more than an iOS 8.4 update announced on stage.

Expect a lot of iOS 9 update information at WWDC 2015.

In the WWDC 2015 information section, Apple also outlines what developers can and cannot do with pre-release information disclosed at the event. This is further proof that we will likely see the iOS 9 update arrive during the keynote and WWDC 2015.

iOS 9 will reportedly focus on fixing bugs and improving performance and the stability of the iPhone and iPad though Gurman now says that it will include changes to Siri that are focused on the look and feel of Apple’s personal assistant. It’s said to mirror the look on the Apple Watch.

The iOS 9 update will also reportedly bring a new wallpaper and a number of security enhancements for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, the specifics of which remain unknown.

The iOS 9 release date isn’t expected until the fall though it’s expected to follow the iOS 8.4 release date in June. Apple could roll out a smaller iOS 8.4.1 update to fix lingering issues but we haven’t heard anything about iOS 8.5.

9 Features We Want from the iOS 9 Release

Siri That Works With Other Apps

Siri That Works With Other Apps

Siri can open other apps, but it cannot control them in the ways we want. In ISO 9 we want Siri to move beyond opening Spotify or Nest and into allowing developers to connect to Siri for controls.

Ideally iOS 9 could allow users to say, "Hey Siri, play Daft Punk on Spotify," and users could listen to the music they want in the app that they want. Apple may choose to keep Siri controls to iTunes, iTunes Radio and maybe Beats, but that doesn't mean we'll like it.

The options are endless, but we would definitely use Siri to turn on Hue Lights, control the Nest thermostat and many other apps if Apple opened up support.

iOS 8.4 Jailbreak

With the iOS 8.4 release date now rumored for late June, jailbreakers are likely getting antsy. Jailbreak developers have, thus far, been unable to release an iOS 8.3 jailbreak for the iPhone and iPad. It’s still not clear if devs have a plan to release an iOS 8.3 jailbreak or if they plan to wait for the release of iOS 8.4. For now, users must remain patient.
