Moto X Android Lollipop Update Release Nears

Published

on

Back in April the Moto X Android 5.1 Lollipop update emerged for one small market in Brazil, but so far that’s it and the millions of owners in the United States are still waiting for the latest software upgrade. Last night Motorola made some key announcements regarding the original Moto X Android 5 Lollipop update, and when we can expect it to arrive.

Android L was first announced as Android 4.4 KitKat’s successor back in June during the company’s annual Google I/O developer event. Then in October Google officially unveiled the full Android 5.0 Lollipop update along with the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 tablet, and a new Nexus Player for the TV. Soon after Motorola made some announcements, and they were among the first to update smartphones too.

While Motorola has been quick to deliver updates to the new 2014 Moto X, Moto G, and even the Moto E, those with the original Moto X from 2013 are still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat. However, that’s about to change, and below are the latest details for those anxiously awaiting the update.

The Android 5.0 Lollipop update isn’t rolling out to smartphones as fast as Android 4.4 KitKat did, but there are a lot of visual and behind the scenes changes that are making the wait a bit longer than expected. Not to mention bugs were quickly fixed with releases of Android 5.0.1, Android 5.0.2, and then in March the huge Android 5.1 Lollipop release. And while Moto has delivered Android 5.0 to a few devices, a slew of them will jump straight from KitKat to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop release.

Last week Motorola posted update details and changelog webpages for both the original 2013 Moto X, and the new Moto X Android 5.1.1 Lollipop updates, something that many weren’t expecting. That said, the updates haven’t arrived yet, and those changelogs for AT&T and T-Mobile appear to have been published online prematurely.

Late last night Motorola’s David Schuster took to Google+ and mentioned the delayed Moto X Android 5.1 update, and had some good news to share for owners. We can expect it to arrive in the next few weeks.

I know that a lot of people have been asking about the status of the Moto X (1st Gen) Lollipop upgrade. I can see the frustration and in some cases the anger about how long it has taken to get the upgrade deployed. It has been a struggle due to the lack of support from some of our partners but I am glad to announce that we are starting TestDrive in both the US and LatAm. If all goes well we should start full deployments in a few weeks.”

The important part of David’s quite above is where he states, ” If all goes well we should start full deployments in a few weeks.” This isn’t a clear date, but it’s a good sign that those with the original Moto X can expect an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop possibly before the end of the month.

As for which version of Android 5.1 Lollipop, we’re not sure. The changelogs and some of Schuster’s previous comments suggest it will be Android 5.1 Lollipop, but last week Google released Android 5.1.1 Lollipop too, so we’ll have to wait and see.

All said and done, the original Moto X (and the new Moto X) should be seeing updates to Android 5.1 Lollipop in the near future, and hopefully the DROID Turbo isn’t too far behind. Stay tuned, and we’ll update once we learn more or the update officially arrives.
