Earlier this year in March the HTC One M9 was announced then released in April with Android 5.0 Lollipop and has since received a few maintenance updates to improve the camera, and now it’s time for Android 5.1 to arrive. We’ve seen Samsung, Motorola, and LG push Android 5.1.1 updates, but HTC is just getting to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

In June the HTC One M9 Android 5.1 Lollipop update leaked to the press, and a few custom ROM’s were released with all of the changes and new features. However, for the millions of regular owners that are waiting for a regular update, today we have good news. Read on below for everything you need to know.

The first HTC One M9 Android 5.1 Lollipop update in the United States emerged last week when HTC’s head of mobile Mo Versi went on Twitter and revealed that Sprint was getting the update, and now others are finally starting to surface.

According to Mo Versi, as shown above, the Sprint HTC One M9 update will deliver all the changes to Android 5.1 by Google, and tweaks to the Sense UI by HTC. Then, owners can also expect additional camera improvements. An update arrived back in April to improve the 20.7 megapixel camera, which was riddled with poor performance, and it looks like HTC is still making changes and further refining the experience for all users.

Today though, one more HTC One M9 in the United States is getting Android 5.1 Lollipop, although this is only for the developer and unlocked edition being sold directly from HTC. Those with the unlocked developer edition HTC One M9 should see a large 800MB update starting today that will bring these changes:

  • Android Lollipop 5.1
  • Data Performance Improvements
  • Call Drop Improvements
  • Battery Life Enhancements
  • Temperature Management Optimization
  • Camera Enhancements

The most notable changes are camera enhancements and temperature management, as there has been countless reports that the 8-core Snapdragon 810 processor inside gets extremely hot. Users will also enjoy faster data, improved stability when it comes to calls and network performance, and last but certainly not least a boost in battery life.

That said, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is the software that fixed the Lollipop memory leak, which has been a cause of many HTC One M8 and M9 problems. This means users could still experience a few problems until the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update arrives, which for now, has no release date in sight.

We’re also hearing the Sprint HTC One M9 update is rolling out to more users this morning, as it has been a slow staggered release in order to make sure there are no critical issues before releasing it to everyone.

Now that the HTC One M9 Android 5.1 Lollipop update is hitting carriers in the United States, unlocked versions in the United States and around the globe, we can expect further announcements and more US carriers to receive a similar update.

It’s recommended that owners download this large 800MB file over a WiFi connection, and have more than 50% battery life before starting the update. Users can head into settings > about phone > software and check for updates now. We’ll report back once more carriers in the US make announcements or deliver the same update to its users.
