Moto X 2015 vs Nexus 6: 5 Key Differences

Published

on

With 2015 more than halfway over multiple smartphones have been announced by all major manufacturers for potential buyers to choose from, and that includes the newly revealed Moto X for 2015. With so many to choose from, here’s we’ll be comparing the new Moto X Pure Edition “Style” to Google’s own Motorola-made Nexus 6.

On July 28th after months of leaks Motorola took the stage and unveiled three brand new devices. An upgraded Moto G for 2015, and two variants of the Moto X which are called the Moto X Style and the Moto X Play. In the US the Moto X Style will be sold as the Moto X Pure Edition, and the Play won’t be released stateside.

This year Motorola has an excellent new flagship smartphone in the 2015 Moto X, but it’s huge 5.7-inch screen size surprised many, and now puts it in the same market as the Galaxy Note 5 and Nexus 6. Below is a comparison and highlights of a few key differences for those considering one of these two smartphones.

In October the Motorola Nexus 6 was announced and it eventually was released in mid-November, and is available on almost all carriers in the United States. A first for a Nexus in a long time, even being available on Verizon Wireless.

The Nexus 6 is Google’s biggest Nexus smartphone, most expensive, but arguably the best with lots of top tier features. And while a new Nexus 5 and/or Nexus 6 for 2015 are reportedly coming soon, the current Nexus 6 is still a great phone that many are considering.

Motorola’s new Moto X for 2015 is a completely different phone from past years. It looks very similar to previous models, but has been upgraded across the board, has a huge 5.7-inch screen, and even a front facing camera flash for selfies. It’s a bold new smartphone or “phablet” but is it enough for buyers to choose it over the Nexus 6 or Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5? We’ll have to wait until September to find out. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about the new Moto X Pure Edition for 2015, and how it compares to the Nexus 6 from late 2014.

Design

Design

The new Moto X and Nexus 6 are actually very similar in terms of design, and that's because Motorola made the Nexus 6 for Google last year. Some are even calling the new Moto X just a smaller Nexus 6, with a few changes. That said, they're still pretty different devices. The Moto X is smaller, more powerful, and extremely customizable.

Both phones have a big display with small bezels and front-facing speakers and an aluminum ring around the entire frame for durability. From the front you'll barely be able to tell the difference, even though one is bigger than the other.

The 2015 Moto X though, is a completely different approach. The back can be completely customized with over 100 different combinations to look how you'd like, which we'll talk more about in a minute.

We can't give one a nod vs the other as I've yet to try the new Moto X, but if it's anything like the Nexus 6, it will be a popular smartphone. They both have the same curves, the same design, the same front speakers and more, so this decision will come down to hardware specs, camera, and likely the price.

The Nexus 6 doesn’t have dual front facing speakers. It just looks like it does.

The Nexus 6 does have dual speakers. Not sure where you are getting your info.

I had stated that I mistook it for the Moto X 2014 (which doesn’t have dual speakers).

You guys have got to do your research. The Nexus 6 has been discounted at the official Google Store for a while now. $499 gets you the 32 GB variant while $549 gets you the 64 GB version.

Which is a real steal…although maybe not so much when the Moto X becomes available

As of Semptember, amazon is selling the nexus 6 for only $350! For 32 GB no less! Keeping in mind there’s no external storage, and memory cards are relatively cheap now, it’s still more storage right out of the gate. I agree, the article should definetly be updated to address this price difference. The prospects are completely different now; the nexus is the “budget” option, and gives you a larger screen, bigger battery, more (internal) storage, and wireless charging (but honestly who’s going to use that with turbocharge onboard). But… The moto X pure has the sweet moto shortcut features (twist to camera, wave over for notifications, “ok Google” without unlocking the screen, etc.), faster turbocharging, customization, much better cameras, and slightly faster chipset. They both have water resistance I believe, but my understanding is that the new moto Xs’ internal and external coatings are more advanced than whatever the nexus has.

I’ll take the SD card over wireless charging! and I love wireless charging:)

you’d be surprised how easy it is to get over not having a sd card…aside from it being the slowest “cog” in the data transfer stream, they fail often, and if you dont back them up regularly, it can be devastating..Plus, with so much cheap/free cloud storage available, you’ll never miss having a sd card..

399 now gets you a 64GB Nexus 6 from Amazon. $100 leaa than 64GB Moto X. Is it worth $100more? I just dont know.
