2016 MacBook Air Rumors Point to Big Changes

Published

on

The 2016 MacBook Air could see some major changes come its way, with a thinner body and a new 15-inch model.

While the MacBook Pro reigns supreme as Apple’s power laptop, the MacBook Air is a category for more casual users who don’t need a lot of power, but want ultra-portability out of their notebook, which is where the Air comes into play.

The MacBook Air was first introduced in 2008, and while it’s now been around for quite a while, it hasn’t changed much over the years design-wise. Over the almost eight years of the laptop’s existence, it hasn’t gotten thinner or received any major hardware changes, which is quite surprising, but also telling as to how amazing the MacBook Air’s design was for its time.

Currently, the MacBook Air comes in 11-inch and 13-inch flavors, but that could be changing next year when the 2016 MacBook Air releases. The MacBook Air is due for a change and it’s likely that Apple knows that.

According to Taiwan website Economic Daily News, it’s said that Apple will introduce a new thinner design for the 2016 13-inch MacBook Air and introduce a larger 15-inch model as well.

There aren’t a lot of details to go off of, but the sources says that the 2016 MacBook Airs will sport a new metal body, as well as a new battery design and cooling modules, allowing for a thinner overall package with the new laptop. It’s not said whether or not the new MacBook Airs would receive Retina displays or not.

It’s likely that the 2016 MacBook Air could borrow some design aspects from Apple’s 12-inch MacBook that was released earlier this year. The new notebook is thinner than the MacBook Air and comes with a new keyboard that shortens key travel, but makes it thinner overall.

The new 12-inch MacBook weighs just two pounds and is only 13.1mm at its thickest point, which is 24% thinner than the 11-inch MacBook Air. That’s pretty impressive.

In fact, we wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Apple simply just made 13-inch and 15-inch versions of its new MacBook and called it the MacBook Air.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned in this latest rumor is the 11-inch MacBook Air, which sounds like it might get discontinued next year, or Apple could keep updating it but not give it the new rumored design and features in order to keep the entry-level cost down for frugal shoppers.

It’s not too surprising that Apple is looking to change things up with the MacBook Air, especially with the new 12-inch MacBook and even the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Screen sizes for the iPad and Macbook are nearly the same now, so Apple might be wanting to try some new things to clearly differentiate its laptops and tablets.

With a starting price tag of $899, the MacBook Air is a tempting purchase if you’re looking for a new laptop, but now might not be the best time to buy one, especially if you already have a laptop that can at least get you through the next few months until the 2016 MacBook Air releases. There’s no doubt that the 2016 model will come with a faster processor and better performance overall. Plus, we’d be extremely surprised if it didn’t come with a Retina display.

The MacBook Air is a good laptop, and it’s the lowest-priced notebook you can buy from Apple, but rumors are pointing to a big overhaul for the ultra-portable laptop that could provide big benefits for you if you wait for a new model to release. Plus, if you’ve been wanting a 15-inch MacBook Air for a while, 2016 could be the year that we’ll see one.
