HTC One M8 Android 6.0 Update Details Arrive

Published

on

Those with the aging HTC One M8 from US carriers have been patiently awaiting the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, after seeing it arrive for countless other variants. This week, it’s finally here for those on Verizon Wireless, and it’s headed to T-Mobile owners as well.

In December HTC delivered on its promise to release Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the HTC One M9 before the end of the year, but that was only for a very select few users with the unlocked model. Then, in January they announced Android 6.0 Marshmallow is headed to both the HTC One M8 and HTC One M9. Sadly, that was for Canadian carriers, and only the Sprint HTC One M8.

Initially HTC was aiming for late December or very early in January for both the HTC One M9 and the older M8, but things aren’t arriving as fast as they hoped. However, HTC’s own Mo Versi has announced multiple details on Twitter that users need to know about.

Before January came to a close the HTC One M9 and One M8 international, unlocked, and Google Play Editions had Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The newer HTC One A9 even has Android 6.0.1 already, and has received monthly security patches as well.

That said, what about the HTC One M8 that was released in 2014? We have good news for those owners as well. Mo Versi, a senior VP and product manager at HTC has shared timelines and release dates (or estimates) for multiple versions of the HTC One M8 in the United States. Here’s what we know.

Update: Following Sprint in January, then Verizon over the weekend, the T-Mobile HTC One M8 is receiving Android 6.0 Marshmallow as of today, March 8th. It was announced late last night.

According to Mo, the Sprint HTC One M8 will get approval soon, and should start rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow as of tomorrow night. January 23rd. This includes the Harmon Kardon edition as well, which is good news for the select few that purchased that model.

The January promise for the T-Mobile M8 never happened, and it didn’t arrive in February either. It took until March 7th to finally arrive, and owners can start checking for updates in March. The same can be said about Verizon, which received it over the weekend.

At this point nearly all HTC One M9 units have received the update, and now HTC is busy working on the older M8 for all US carriers, while also preparing to announce the new HTC 10 sometime in March.

Above goes over most of the changes coming in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and HTC will likely have plenty of their own bug fixes and performance enhancements as well. Especially to HTC Sense. The changelog from HTC specifically mentions improved permission controls for better security, Google Now on Tap, Android Doze for better battery life, latest security patches and much more.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow doesn’t offer too many visual changes, but there are plenty of new additions to Android. From faster performance, better battery life, tighter security, better volume controls and more. It’s a big update that all owners should accept once it arrives. Thoe with the HTC One M8 on Sprint should see it first, potentially tomorrow night. Wait for the over the air notification, or head into settings > about phone > check for updates and manually pull the update and install it.

We’d recommend using a WiFi connection and having nearly 50% or more battery remaining. Also, check out these helpful tips to backup your smartphone before the update in case anything goes wrong and a factory data reset is required.

Stay tuned for more details, as HTC should begin pushing multiple Android 6.0 updates to the M8 in the United States and elsewhere.

The M8 update for Sprint is supposed to happen tonight. Mo Versi’s tweet from yesterday said approval today and OTA tonight, not tomorrow.

That’s very strange. The update did say around an hour. But mine only took 20mins. And I didn’t have the screen problem. I would try turning it off. In case it has crashed .Though if I run my boot loader now. Since the update. I get the red explanation mark. (As in bricked) And it says “modified” My M8 is 100% stock. I sure won’t be turning it off. For fear of this. Give it an hour or so. Then try turning off.

Got my m8 update on 22nd and I’m on Vodafone UK. Impressed and relieved they released it. Hope to utilise the sdcard as internal storage as 16GB is not nearly enough!

    Help!!

The update has screwed up my One M8.

It keeps putting a Do not distrurb settings box on my screen, can’t remove it. The power button keeps sticking, and the volume control keeps coming off.

Tried a clean install but no luck.

Its ruined my HTC M8 – anyone else had this problem?

This update has made my M8 perform worse than a 40 dollar Metro phone. I mean it. I checked out all the major carrier and tried several phones before settling on the HTC. Now it is garbage to me. And I have no recourse. I will NEVER EVER buy HTC again. And yes I spent hours with customer service set and resetting and reinstalling. I gfues the average person doesn’t notice or care about the slight lag and hesitation in every app. I do.

it ruined my phone , all apps are crashing i have no sound anywhere on the phone, no calls no recordings, and it bricked my phone until the battery died, i charged it and made it to start but it still has all the above

The update has left my M8 in a boot loop. I can get into a recovery screen, but there are no options that let me repair or revert. It’s effectively bricked my phone.

The update has left my phone pretty useless. I have never had a problem with the storage and always had plenty spare, but since the update I am not even able to open my gallery as it says I do not have enough storage (to even view my pictures?).

I have deleted as much as I can from the phone and I am currently in the process of transferring all my pictures off my phone (via USB as Google Drive keeps crashing since the update). However, I have looked at my storage settings and it says I can only make 5GB available anyway, so does this mean the system now requires 11GB of space on a 16GB phone, or is my phone just not showing the values properly? Not sure how they can get off selling a 16GB phone with only 5GB of usable space to be quite honest.

Also, Google Drive isn’t the only app that keeps crashing. I have several apps on my phone which are no longer working. I can open them and then after a couple of seconds it will say it has stopped working. I have closed all apps but it still keeps trying to open Google Drive to tell me it has stopped working, despite me reporting the error and fully closing the app.

My contract upgrade is due next month and I was considering keeping my phone and just getting a sim only contract, but if this is how the new software is going to make my phone run, I am most certainly not keeping it any longer than I absolutely have to.

Yep. I have the same issue too. The keypad gets stuck quite often even with containing the apps to 3.5 GB and leaving a good 1.5 GB on internal storage. Not sure how much more free space I need to make to ensure stuck free phone as it used be before the update. As you said, it’s a pretty useless update if it leaves 5 GB free space on a 16GB handset. Found any solution for this ?

This has completely shagged my keyboard. In certain apps it doesn’t allow you to use predictive text, for instance in the eBAy search, and also the keyboard is way less responsive, the predictive text is even worse than it used to be, and they’ve re-arranged the keyboard too. Like Vicky above, I was hoping to just go with a Sim in April. Now, I’ll be getting a non-HTC phone. Last in a string of issues going back to my previous phone

Not impressed, no predictive text for Google or eBay. Phone type Keyboard not as responsive and seems to have lost most of my stored words. Can’t seem to save anything to SD anymore either

This was driving me crazy too! All I had was a dark blue screen with a chain of messages you had to struggle to figure out who said what.

Go to message settings (the three dots at the top of the text screen), select settings, general, and UNDER “CHANGE BUBBLE COLORS”, select “Restore Defaults.” This will add bubbles (which were missing on mine) in gray and white. Go back to text to check it, and then go to Change bubble colors and choose your preferences. I was so happy to figure it out, I felt like I had cured cancer.

Got both the update & full Marshmallow version last night. Some good features for personalizing & syncing that fixed mine where it got stuck. Also, live wallpapers are much faster, instead of the L.A.G…… I love my HTC One M8, and sooooo glad the upgrade arrived! Battery is lasting longer also. YAY!!

Today my HTC One M8 (Verizon) said it was downloading firmware. All day. 0% downloaded, all day. This evening I re-started it to make that go away. Update status says the download failed. Check new does nothing. Doesn’t even tell me it’s checking. Any idea what happened?

    • Dale Spradling

Hi Cynthia, I had the same problem. Reboot the phone to clear the failing download, then go to Settings and scroll to the bottom and click System Update. Click Check New and see if it works. Be sure to have your charger connected or at least 50% battery.

Loaded the HTC One M8 yesterday morning with full battery… Now my phone will only display a red Verizon screen with a white check mark… Verizon tells me that the phone is done… Now I’m on the hook for a new phone… Back to the iphone…

This 6.0 update from Verizon has ruined my previously flawless htc m8. Battery used to last now the phone will turn off at 48%. It’ll drain from 100% to 66% after simply checking email and going to a few websites. My battery used to last all day now I have to take a portable charger. Gmail freezes, chrome is now slow as molasses and freezes as well. The camera loads slow then shuts down. Played some music and battery was annihilated.Apps have disappeared and forget the play store! Nothing downloads without an issue. I have been a loyal android user and never even thought of using an iPhone but all this bullshit, rendering my phone almost useless, has made me think of going to the darkside. Maybe the nexus 6p wirh GoogIefi, but after the security issues I’m not sure about that either. I am due for an upgrade and my contract is up so I wonder if Verizon is trying to force me to get a new phone.

M8 phone now bricked thanks to Android 6 update. All i get is this stupid green hills background flashing on and off every few seconds. All I can access is the Power off screen when holding the power button. Now got a very expensive paperweight. Won’t be buying HTC ever again!!

My HTC M8 phone updated to Android 6, in addition to changing personal items and looks (wall paper, keyboard etc.) the battery drains at a fantastic rate. Last night when to bed with 90-95% and this morning it was at 49% with nothing running. I am calling ATT to try to flash the older OS back into the phone.
