9 Dark Souls 3 Problems & How to Fix Them
Visually satisfying and unbelievably difficult, that’s how early reviewers and players have described this week’s biggest release, Dark Souls 3. As its name suggests, the game is the second sequel to a franchise that’s captivated role-playing lovers looking for something with a darker story and lore.
The Dark Souls 3 release back in April. Players are sharing clips of the latest triumphs and looking for help to ensure that their greatest failures in the game won’t be repeated. They’re also looking for ways to solve some of the Dark Souls 3 problems that they’ve found.

Many issues are simply bugs that’ll need to be addressed by FromSoftware, the developer that created the game. Others seem to be problems related to how the game interacts with certain hardware configurations on Windows PCs.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Dark Souls 3 for PC Crashes
An overwhelming number of people who purchased digital copies of Dark Souls 3 through Valve’s Steam service are reporting that the game randomly crashes. Some on the Steam Community Forum believe that at least some of the random crashes are caused by how the game renders hair on player’s skulls.
Try covering your character’s head with a piece of gear, like a helmet or hat. Dark Souls 3 PC players are reporting very good results with this solution.
Other users have reported that they notice the game crashes are somehow related to burning objects or maybe the lighting system. There’s a running list of crash information on Bandai Namco’s Support Forum where you can add your crash notes to the list and help FromSoftware pinpoint where the issue is.
PC Gamer suggests that Windows players running into issues with lighting and textures artificially limit the game’s visuals from within the settings screen.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Can’t Connect to Dark Souls 3 Servers
Randomly, users are reporting that they can’t get online with Dark Souls 3. Why this is happening isn’t yet clear. There’s no consensus on fixing the issue either. Again, this is only a problem for the PC version of the game right now.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Game Stuttering
For some reason, even users with expensive video cards and lots of RAM in their Windows PCs are having issues with Dark Souls 3 stuttering.
One user on Steam was able to fix this problem by restoring the previous driver on his NVIDIA GTX graphics card. Users should check to see if they have the latest drivers. If the game starts stuttering, try heading into the graphics settings and restoring the previous one.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Xbox One Game Crashes
Owners of Microsoft’s Xbox One confirm that if Dark Souls 3 fails to connect properly to online servers, it can completely fail and send users back to the Xbox One dashboard. FromSoftware has confirmed this is an issue. It plans to fix that issue in a forthcoming update to the Xbox One version of the game.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: White Screen
PC users report that Dark Souls 3 will launch, but only give them a white screen with a mouse cursor on it.
Steam users have had success with switching to their PC’s integrated graphics instead of using their dedicated graphics card. NVIDIA users can do this from within the Control Panel app that’s installed on their device. The option is in the Manage 3D Settings Menu. Just set Dark Souls 3 to always use integrated graphics by default.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Xbox One & PS4 Controller Issues for PC
Though they’ve purchased the game on a PC, some people prefer not to play their games with a mouse and keyboard. Instead, they simply pair their Xbox One or PS4 controller with their game.
Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 will all go out and find the latest drivers for any device that you plug into your device. Head into the Device Manger menu to make sure that your controller’s drivers have installed correctly. Note that Windows 10 has the drivers for the Xbox One Wireless Controller installed automatically.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Update 1.07 (New)
On May 20th, FromSoftware plans to roll out a huge update to address some of the Dark Souls 3 problems that users are still experiencing, mainly the password matching issues, according to a post on the Dark Souls Reddit.
- “Adjusted the efficiency of the Great shield category
- Adjusted the consuming FP of the Magic Spell Category
- Adjusted the efficiency of the category below: – Dragon Slayer’s Axe – Crescent Axe – Dark Drift – Washing Pole – Moonlight Great Sword
- Fixed the shield penetration rate of some attacks in the scythe category
- Fixed the stamina attack of some weapon categories.
- Improved the matching of the Blade of the Darkmoon and the Blue Sentinels covenants.
- Improved the password matching rate 8. Improved other game balance 9. Several game flaws fixed”
PlayStation and Xbox players can expect the game to be unavailable from 6PM May 19th until Midnight May 20th Pacific Time. The Steam version of the game will go down from 1AM to 3AM on May 20th Pacific Time.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Cathedral of the Deep Crash (New)
Reported by players on PCs equipped with Steam, a problem with Cathedral of the Deep causes Dark Souls 3 to crash. There’s no way around this problem just yet. Just know that it’s not happening to just your copy of the game.
Dark Souls 3 Problems: Lost Game Saves (New)
A smattering of users are complaining of a software bug on the PC version of the game that corrupts their save and renders all of their characters unusable in the game’s support forum. We’re still waiting for Bandai Namco and FromSoftware to provide guidance on this issue. It doesn’t seem to be harming a large swatch of players.

I’m still having controller issues actually. I have disabled the HID devices and unplugged all hardware including keyboard and mouse.
Also, all my drivers have been updated. This is a waste of $70 if I can’t get this fixed. Please help !!

how to fix controller issues. Unplug all your other controllers, like anything that could be considered a joystick. I had my G13 plugged in. SO unplug everything but your controller and then restart your computer. and viola!

If you are having stuttering issues. Go to Steam folder and remove GameOverlayRenderer64.dll and GameOverlayRenderer.dll and then play.

I have had this game for weeks now. I have refused to play it until the calibration issues are fixed. I am on XBOX ONE. It is May 4th 2016 and the problem has STILL not been fixed. I’m so disappointed that I downloaded this game instead of buying in store. If I had a physical disc I would have sold this on eBay already. This is ridiculous.

My stuttering was fixed thanks to another steam user. Apparently turning off the Microsoft Device Association Root Enumerator in device manager solved the stuttering. If I could find the original post I’d link it to give credit to the person but can’t seem to find it. Hopefully works for others on PC.
