BlackBerry 4G PlayBook Canceled by Sprint

It looks like there is more bad news for RIM as the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has canceled the WiMax-enabled BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that was supposed to arrive sometime this fall. The WiMax PlayBook had originally been supposed to launch this summer but reports in June then surfaced indicated that it had been pushed back until the fall.

Turns out, it won’t be launching at all. The reason? Sprint says that the PlayBook is “an interesting concept, it just hasn’t caught on with business customers as much as they would like” and further states that “there are so many tablets in the market, it creates confusion for the average customer.”

In other words, it’s probably not going to do well in an already crowded market.

Tough blow for RIM and for those that were hoping to get a 4G-powered BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Sprint made sure to let the public know that this decision has had zero impact on the carrier’s relationship with RIM.

Sprint’s decision means that the PlayBook still doesn’t have a home on any of the three biggest U.S. carriers and that has got to be a pretty hard fact to swallow.

Update: It seems RIM is going to be focusing on 4G LTE tablets in the future. Here is their statement to us:

RIM has decided to prioritize and focus its 4G development resources on LTE. We remain excited and committed to delivering innovative and powerful 4G tablets to the US market together with our carrier partners. Testing of BlackBerry 4G PlayBook models is already underway and we plan to enter labs for network certifications in the US and other international markets this fall.
