Sharp Galapagos E-Reader Tablet to Take on Nook Color

Published

on

Sharp’s Galapagos brand e-reader tablet comes in two different different screen sizes: 5.5- and 10.8-inch. Sharp isn’t disclosing what operating system the tablets were running at CES, but the company did give us a demo of the 5.5-inch version on video at the show. The device has a 3D-cube user interface, a trackball for navigating, and the ability to download contents such as books, magazines, newspapers and movies to be watched. Check out the video below:

According to the company, if you subscribe to magazines, a fresh copy of your daily paper would automatically get pushed out to your device every morning so you don’t have to refresh it or wait to download the newest news content.

As more of a curated tablet experience where Sharp is limiting this as an e-reader tablet, the experience is comparable to Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color, which hides most traces of Android in favor of a custom user interface and digital content from the bookseller, with email and games serving as a distant secondary function.

When choosing an eReader, you need to consider not only the physical properties of the device, but also compare eBook stores behind it. Is this going to be like Sony eReaders with 25 books behind it? DEAD ON ARRIVAL, like many before it. Nook’s eBook store has over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available. Nook Color has available first on the market 12,000 (more soon) kids books that are built as a game with feedback. One other advantage of Nook would be that when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store you’re allowed to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. You can use Nook to checkout library eBooks and lend books to for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.)

I agree that you should always look at the eBook stores behind the readers. I have a Nook Color and love it. But Sony also has a very large library and access to the millions of free books AND can also check out library books (really any device that can read ePub can – verified with my local library)

Yes agree with Dnel, Sony does have free Epub. Books to download and like many be able to read Word docs, PDF files. I personally just use either my IPad 3G or Galaxy Tab. Lately have been using the Tab more often than my IPad. Even out here at CES2011 on the show floor to post and check up to date info. I agree that the NookCOLOR is a great device. You can root the device and basically have a reallygood tablet and now have opened up the door to more stores to download to the NookCOLOR.
