HTC Thunderbolt Details, Review & Hands-On Video Roundup

Published

on

The HTC Thunderbolt is one of the most anticipated phones of the year, with countless Android fans waiting for an official release date so they can upgrade. Verizon hasn’t set an official release date, but rumor is that the phone will be available as early as tomorrow (February 24). If you’re thinking of buying an Android phone soon, you might just want to wait until the HTC Thunderbolt hits store shelves.

HTC Thunderbolt Reviews (update)

The HTC Thunderbolt was officially launched on March 17, 2011 and we rushed out to pick up a pair for review. We’re working on a comprehensive HTC Thunderbolt review, but have some early thoughts to share. We have been very impressed with the Thunderbolt’s 4G LTE wireless performance. As you can see in the video below, it is extremely fast. The HTC Thunderbolt battery life score was disappointing, clocking in at less than four hours.

What is the HTC Thunderbolt?

The HTC Thunderbolt is a smartphone that resembles the HTC EVO 4G, the first phone to run on a 4G network. The EVO 4G ran on Sprint’s WiMax Network, while the HTC Thunderbolt runs on Verizon’s LTE 4G network. It’s been about a year since the EVO 4G was introduced, which means there’s been time for Android phones to evolve. The HTC Thunderbolt is more feature-packed than the EVO 4G and has beefier specs.

The HTC Thunderbolt is the first phone to run on Verizon’s speedy LTE network. The Verizon LTE Network promises average download speeds of 5-12 mbps and average upload speeds of 2-5mbps. Thunderbolt users will be able to make calls and use the data connection simultaneously, something that is not possible on the Verizon version of the iPhone 4.

HTC Thunderbolt Hands-On, Review Videos (Hands-on, Reviews)

Our own Chuong Nguyen got his hands on an HTC Thunderbolt at CES 2011 and shot this video overview of the smartphone.  In the video, the speed of the Thunderbolt and Verizon’s LTE network are demonstrated.

Android Police also took a nice video of the HTC Thunderbolt at CES 2011.

Aaron from PhoneDog shot a video of the Thunderbolt’s introduction at the HTC press conference. He also got to spends some quality hands-on time with the phone.

The guys from MotoDroidLife recorded the highest fidelity video of the HTC Thunderbolt we could find. Shot in 1080p with what appears to be a DSLR, it’s about a sharp of a look at the Thunderbolt you’ll get without playing with it yourself.

HTC Thunderbolt Unboxing Videos

There aren’t that many HTC Thunderbolt unboxing videos floating around quite yet, but we did find two good ones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0Mx-nkvQUA

HiTekData.com got their hands on a pre-release Thunderbolt and run through the unboxing and setup process in this video.

Wirefly does the same in this video.

HTC Thunderbolt Commercial

Wow, great, comprehensive review. Lots of information packed in here, you basically answered every question I might have had. Thank you …

Verizon released an HTC Thunderbolt commercial yesterday, which is more entertaining than informative. The release of the HTC Thunderbolt commercial hints that the official release date is imminent.

HTC Thunderbolt vs HTC EVO 4G

Wirefly, a wireless reseller, compared the HTC Thunderbolt to the HTC EVO 4G in the above video. If you’re about to pull the trigger on the EVO 4G, you’ll definitely want to watch this video. As you can see, the HTC ThunderBolt is very similar in appearance. If your family is tied into a Sprint contract, don’t fret too much as we expect HTC to build something comprable for Sprint in the near future.

As you can see in the above video, the Thunderbolt is much faster than the EVO 4G.

The HTC Thunderbolt thicker than the EVO 4G.The HTC Thunderbolt has a much sturdier kickstand and rear speaker placement is different. The thicker kickstand allows the Thunderbolt to stand up in portrait mode, which is great if you want to video chat hands free. The EVO 4G’s battery is larger than the Thunderbolt.

One huge advantage the HTC Thunderbolt has over the EVO 4G is that it comes with 8GB of internal storage and a 32GB microSD card pre-installed for a total of 40GB of storage for apps and data. The Thunderbolt has 50% more system memory than the EVO.

HTC Thunderbolt Availability and Pricing

The HTC Thunderbolt will be available through Verizon.com, Verizon retail stores and all authorized Verizon resellers.

Best Buy is the only retailer taking pre-orders of the device. In order to place a Thunderbolt pre-order, you’ll need to visit your local Best Buy and fork over a $50 deposit. Best Buy is not taking Thunderbolt pre-orders through its website. The HTC Thunderbolt will retail for $249.99 with a new two-year Verizon contract or eligible upgrade.

Wirefly is another major mobile reseller that is promising it will have Thunderbolts available the first day they go on sale.

Verizon is playing coy with the official release dates, despite the ads, online promotions and Best Buy pre-orders. The company is offering more info about the device at Verizon.com, where you can also sign up for alerts about the Thunderbolt.

I would not hold your breath for the Feb. 28th release date. I have been dead on thus far with my info and predictions. Verizon just keeps dropping the ball. The Thunderbolt is going to be a big disappointment. I can not believe Verizon has added insult to injury by asking $299.00 for this phone. This phone will be marked down to $150.00 before the summer starts and everyone will have forgotten all about the Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt is alot of rumbling and no big thunder bang or lightning to follow. What a joke so far. I am going to pass on the Thunderbolt. What a disappointment for a phone that had so much hype. WTF. It is not that hard if they just think of customer relations and keep people imformed.

I don’t know what news sources you’re getting info from or what videos you’re watching, but everything I’ve seen suggests the Thunderbolt is one helluva good device. Release date suggests tomorrow, if it’s a few days yet, well, so be it.

As for the price, $299 for what — based on the Wirefly video’s benchmark tests — suggests it’s among the fastest phones available not to mention the 4G and the high storage capacity makes it extremely worth the premium.

Frankly, I feel comparing it to last year’s EVO is a bit unfair, and I’d almost look for an EVO2 this year to compare with instead.

I read on line March 21st. I am waiting patiently but I want it NOW!!! I waited Feb. 14th, then the 24th and now another month…:( I know it is worth the wait. I was hoping to have it soon…. oh @@#$#%% well. I pray March 21st is wrong and it comes sooner instead of much later.

Your definition of soon and VWireless’ definition of soon are two different things. They have advertised “coming soon” for a looooooong time! Their marketing strategy is gone, people feel tricked, and if they still have problems with the phone with HotSpots, etc. then it’s not worth the wait. Before you buy it, whenever it does come out and before locking yourself into yet another contract, read reviews on HTC phones….you may be surprised!!

Yes, I agree it will be marked down at your predicted time, why….because they will be debuting the Droid Bionic which is a much better phone anyway. If people are gonna choose to wait indefinitely for the Thunderbolt…they might as well wait a month or so longer for the Droid Bionic! Sort through all the VWireless marketing ploys and you’ll see a pattern, plus a Motorola phone is better than an HTC hands down!

You must be totally retarded. And as far as the bionic goes you need to read up on your info. moto bionic is not better than the htc by any means. htc’s biggest problem is putting small batteries in good phones. All you people and release dates ….. stop being 12 and wait…. would u rather have a phone like the iphone4 on at&t with no network and death grip?????? didn think so. Your precious Bionic only has 512mb of ram. guess what the thunderbolt has??? 768mb of ram ummmm that’s gonna be faster my friend. And should we go to storage as well?? humm 40gb for TB and 16GB for you Bionic.

        • Bionic owns

          03/11/2011 at 5:41 pm

          Wrong
You’re comparing ddr ram to ddr2 so to be fair its about even on ram. Thunderbolt only has a 1ghz single core while bionic has 1ghz dual core which allows for more commands at a time. Bionic has a higher pixel density. Bionic has HDMI out. Bionic owns Thunderbolt.

          So shutup HTC fanboy

@ Hans. You can all pissy at me. However, I have been dead on. You should be pissed at Verizon for trying to push out an over priced phone. I had the EVO and it returned it. It was a good phone on a crappy network. Battery life was average at best. The tb still has not been test driven on the Verizon network. In addition, Verizon has not been ablle to delivery thus far. The Iphone 4 was abust. They had an army of Verizon employees working on the day of the iphone 4 (or was that iphone 3 ha ha) and five people showed up. Also, they have created all this hype over the Thunderbolt and can’t even get a release date confirmed. So don’t get your panties in a twist when I write the truth. Verizon keeps dropping the ball and continue to over charge there customers in an extremely competitive market. It only takes one new very good device to have people change carriers. Verizon will not continue to take over if they keep dropping the ball. I hope that I am wrong about the tb. So far I have been dead on.

After reserving this phone 3 weeks ago when able to first pre-order it, I have been nothing but patient awaiting it… But patience only gets you so far… It seems now that I am looking every 4 hours for a release date news… But here is some news I got from calling Best Buy today… They said the phone will be out somewhere between the 24th thru the 28th. Not an exact release date but the way that Verizon has been thank God that Best Buy was finally able to give me at least some time-frame. This was around the St. Louis area btw…

    • Tfinelli

      02/24/2011 at 2:58 am

I like that time frame better than March 21st. I have been checking and calling BB and Verizon and no will say a word…. Frustrating. I have been waiting since Dec. 26th to replace phone and was told Feb. 13th was my upgrade. So I go into Best Buy and was told about the thunderbolt. I was all set too buy the Droid X. Now I have no phone till thunderbolt comes in !!!!..

      • Thunder Bolting

        02/24/2011 at 2:07 pm

Exactly why is it that you could/can preorder the Thunderbolt from Best Buy but NOT Verizon Wireless. And, Verizon wireless says I cannot order it from Best Buy because I am a current Verizon Wireless customer. What’s with this mentality….all those that have done business with VWireless for many, many years can’t preorder VWireless’ phone??? Give me a break??????

        • bendeng

          03/07/2011 at 5:41 pm

You don’t have to purchase your devices from Verizon Wireless. Best Buy offers upgrades and new contracts just like any Carrier Store would do and it all goes onto the same account you already have or a new one if you want to set that up as well. Also, Best Buy carries more accessories and a much better “insurance” plan compared to the Assurance Wireless plans they charge you deductibles for with most Carriers while Best Buy offers Buy Back and Geek Squad Black Tie Protection.

I called BB too, they are full of crap. I pre-ordered, they said the 13th. I call on the 13th, no juice, the 24th is now the day. I call today, no dice, now they don’t know when. This is a public relations nightmare for Verizon. Maybe I should dump my 5 phone lines (4 with data), my mifi, my home phone, and Fios and just give them the finger. (But damn, I still want the phone :( )

        02/24/2011 at 1:58 pm

I actually asked VWireless technical support if they had been trained yet for the Thunderbolt. At first, the tech said NO and when I said that’s impossible, that can’t release a NEW phone that techs know nothing about. The tech then said, “okay…but we’ve only been give a flyer to read.” I told him that’s not true and he said it absolutely is. Very telling…Go Figure???? Still have a lot of confidence in a pricey new phone which is being “delayed” and “delayed.” Whatever!!

I also called Best Buy a few hours ago (here in northern Jersey) and they also said the phone will be out somewhere between the 24th thru the 28th. So there is some consistency at least between here and St. Louis. To me this phone is well worth the wait.

Booooo! No TB for us today. Good thing I took the ICrap4 back last night. At this rate, who knows when that Damn TB will be coming out. I’ll wait impatiently. Sad thing is, I broke my contract with Sprint and was billed the ETF, so the TB will be costing me $450.00. Let’s hope I didn’t make a mistake.

This is turning into a flipping (no pun intended) circus and is gonna backfire on Verizon Wireless…coming soon!! I returned my defective Fascinate and have been anxiously awaiting the Thunderbolt in lieu of the IPhone. In the meantime…going back to my enVTouch until it’s release is getting old, really old. NO PHONE is worth waiting this long for and the Droid Bionic is gonna be a better phone anyway. Verizon needs to drop the “tease” quickly…..they are pushing their customers too far!!! People won’t ride the Thunderbolt bandwagon much longer. I too signed up for emails on the NEW website for updates….I got one yesterday…a Newsletter about the IPhone. It’s at the point where I feel ‘TRICKED” and I believe VWireless is deliberately stringing people along….and I WON’T BE PLAYED. So, since it’s not released today….I’m moving on. And, that means with ALL my Verizon Wireless Services…modems and all!! I’ll buy out my contract (which I believe they have broken anyway) and just head for the nearest Apple store….I need a new desktop computer anyway and the IPhone 5 will be out soon. Happy Trails Verizon….you are not going to make a ‘sucker’ out of me. And while you live for your shareholders…remember, you wouldn’t have any without your customers. 4-G service isn’t available in my area anyway….(just the Detroit area and Canada) but they say the 4-G service will be here FAST. I challege and respectfully request that VWireless Corp Executives explain their definition of soon, fast, around the corner, etc.

      02/24/2011 at 7:25 pm

Agreed. I’ve been patiently waiting since around November. I have been checking up on it frequently and have been let down every time. Rumors may be rumors, but all this hush-hush bullshit is really getting old from Verizon. They have failed at this launch in so many ways. I also gave it till today and no release date or anything has become of it from Verizon, Best Buy or HTC. So I’m moving on as well. I hope they enjoy a failed launch. They deserve it for stringing their “valued” customers on for this long without any notice. .

I heard on line that VZW mostly releases their phones on Thursday’s, so I called VZW and spoke with a very knowledgeable guy who looked it up on about 4 or 5 phones and did indeed say that looks to be the case. March 3rd has floated around, but the 21st is a Monday. So basically if this is consistent , we’re looking at the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th or the 31st. Why do you say the Droid is going to be better? Is it because the processor? I heard that the dual core won’t be that much faster? Someone said that Motorolla is much better than HTC, what makes you say that? I am not doubting that, I am just asking because I am somewhat ignorant when it comes to smart phones.

It’s a bit sad that you guys are so impatient. It was the same thing as with the iPhone. VZW customers are so impatient and mean. I’ve been with them since I started having my own cell phone, and have yet to be disappointed. I waited for the Droid and have had it every since its come out. Now, I’m waiting patiently for the Thunderbolt bc I know it will be awesome. Just be patient people. Also, don’t blame a company for a decision you make. We all make decisions based on the information we have at the time. Anywho, I’m very excited about this phone and will wait for it until it is perfect!!

I agree with you. I have been with Verizon since I had a phone of my own and I never got disappointed. The connection is much better on Verizon than any other carrier, I’ve compared with all my friends that had other carriers now most of them changed to Verizon because they noticed how much better the service is. I will wait for this phone it seems really great. When Verizon puts something out they always try to make it be the best that they can. They are probably prolonging the release because they are finding and fixing some final gliches.

Best Buy is the one that really screwed up. They were told by Verizon that they didn’t have to listen to their recommendation to postpone the TB. Honestly if Verizon was so worried about buyers remorse on the iphone4 then they should not have released the iphone4. Send it back to Apple if it’s a piece of crap, don’t trick customers into buying it. Actually it works just great and I don’t know what they were worried about. The TB was Best Buy’s baby to roll out. It is sitting in the warehouse not waiting for upgrades, which by the way can be sent automatically over the air preventing this type of disaster. Best Buy screwed their customers out the much relied on ‘customer satisfaction return policy’ and Verizon did the same. They screwed themselves. Phones are only the newest and best for 3-4 months. They burnt out the clock with all this delay BS.

Hey everyone…one of my very reliable sources at my local BB (my brother who would not lie to me and is the district manager) called me today and told me the TB will be out tomorrow nationwide…. this has all been a marketing scheme, to promote that no one know when thunder will strike… he told me that all the employees have sign a document not to tell anyone and that the phone will be out tomorrow for sure… Friday the 25!!!! I am so happy…. No more rumors for me!!!! I am 100% sure about this…. you will all see…. the TB will be here tomorrow to blow you all away!!!! i promise…!!! thank me tomorrow!!!!!

I have been waiting on this phone for months. I honestly have had so many issue’s with the verizon company as a whole service, billing issues, quality of phones they put their name one. This phone was the only reason I was gonna stay and all my f & f are Verizon. I’m over it. AT&T have the motorola Atrix. I think it’s the same phone for the most part and the penalty fee will get waived for terminating my Verizon contract. They have to fix this and that it’s probably one of those phone that will never work right prototype type situation day late and a dollar short

Yes, the HTC Thunderbolt can send and receive pics/data while on a call. Specs released by WireFly, a Verizon reseller confirmed this.
