Apple Tests iPad Retina Displays Manufactured by LG, Samsung

Apple is said to be in the process of testing large high resolution displays for its iPad 3 tablet made by LG and Samsung. The panels, which are said to feature a QXGA resolution, or 2048 X 1536 pixels, will bear the same 4:3 aspect ratio as those found on today’s iPad rather than the 16:9 aspect ratio of Google’s 10-inch Honeycomb tablets with their 1280 X 800 resolution. These displays will be made by LG and Samsung:

The imminent deals would assure that Samsung and LG continue to be the biggest providers of flat screens to Apple for the foreseeable future. Samsung and LG are two of the few LCD makers that are at ease with highly-advanced LCD screens. 

Testing for the display has already begun by Apple at one of its laboratories in China, according to the report from the Korean Times. It’s still unclear when Apple intends to launch these tablets, but it is rumored that these displays will make their way into the iPad 3.

While Apple is looking to increase the resolution for the iPad tablet, Android manufacturers are also looking at higher resolution displays as well. Motorola’s next-generation Xoom is said to have a very high definition screen.

A Retina-like Display iPad has been rumored since Apple had announced the iPhone 4 with its rich pixel dense display. Since then, Android manufacturers have caught up with their qHD screens, which is a variant of the Retina Display resolution that supports a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio more suited towards video watching.
