Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Sales in Europe Blocked by Apple

Published

on

Apple scored a win this week in the tablet space without releasing a new iPad. How you ask? By stopping the competition of course. Apple celebrated a major win in Germany this week where a court blocked the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from launching in the European Union.

Apple alleges that Samsung has violated the patented design of the iPad 2 with the thin and iPad-esque Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet. A judge in Düsseldorf has issued a preliminary injunction in favor of Apple, which means that Samsung must pull the Galaxy Tab from store shelves throughout the EU.

While Samsung can appeal the ruling, it cannot sell the Galaxy Tab throughout Europe until a judge rules in the South Korean company’s favor. Apple is pursuing legal action in numerous jurisdictions including with Australia and here in the U.S.

Apple claims that Samsung has stolen the iconic product design of the iPad and iPhone in various products on numerous fronts.

An Apple Spokesman tells The Telegraph, “It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging. This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

It looks like Samsung, and Android fans in the European Union, have an uphill battle in front of them as the same judge would be the one to hear an appeal and that could take up to fours weeks.

If you live in the European Union and have been thinking of purchasing a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, you may want to run out and try to find one on store shelves before Samsung gets the word out.
