Microsoft Apps to Come to Nokia’s Symbian Smartphones

In another example of the Nokia-Microsoft partnership, Microsoft will soon release more of its apps and services for Nokia’s Symbian-based smartphones. Called Microsoft Apps, the software suite of productivity applications will be landing on Nokia’s Symbian Anna and Belle smartphones in late 2011, which is also the same time that Nokia will be unveiling its very first Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Microsoft apps will bring Microsoft OneNote, Microsoft Lync 2010 Mobile, Microsoft Document Connection, and Microsoft PowerPoint Broadcast to Symbian Belle smartphones as well as to those devices running Anna today that will be upgraded to Belle. 

– Microsoft OneNote – rich note taking with images. Syncs with Microsoft SkyDrive®.
– Microsoft Lync 2010 Mobile – cost efficient IM, presence, audio and web meetings on the go.
– Microsoft Document Connection – single view to documents stored on mobile, including email attachments as well as documents on SharePoint 2010 sites.
– Microsoft PowerPoint Broadcast – view broadcasts of presentations directly from PC to mobile.

These apps will be available beginning late Q4 2011, and broad consumer availability will occur in early 2012, according to Nokia.

Additionally, in 2012, another Symbian update will further extend the Finnish phone-maker’s partnership with Microsoft by delivering native Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps outside of the Microsoft mobile operating system environment. These mobile Microsoft Office apps will be available for the first time on a platform that’s not Windows Mobile or Windows Phone.
