iPhone 5 Could Launch in October With Qualcomm 4G LTE Chip

Apple’s iPhone 5 is coming this year, with recent rumors saying it will launch in the fall. The newest possibility says that a chip supply issue could mean the sixth generation iPhone will launch in October this year.

According to Apple Insider, analyst Gene Munster sent out a note to investors saying that Qualcomm is seeing supply issues with its 28-nanometer 4G LTE chip. Munster believes the supply issues will result in the iPhone 5 launching in October. Qualcomm expects the supply issues to last until September.

Despite the supply issues, Munster believes Qualcomm will be able to produce enough chips to supply Apple for a launch in the fall. The analyst said “It is more likely the phone launches in October given Qualcomm commentary around 28nm chip supply. We believe Apple will include LTE in the iPhone 5 as an important feature in the product update.”

Even if Apple was planning on a summer launch for the next iPhone, these supply issues indicate that it likely won’t happen. Not even Apple can mass produce a phone for a big launch when a major component is facing supply issues.

Although, Munster also believes that it doesn’t matter when Apple releases the next iPhone, as long as it’s a “compelling” upgrade. Better data speeds with 4G LTE would certainly be an enticing upgrade. The rumored larger screen would be a compelling upgrade as well, at it would be to some users.

The Qualcomm chip that Apple will likely use in the iPhone 5 is the MDM9615 4G LTE chip. The chip allows for both data and voice over 4G LTE.
