iOS 6 Release Date Pegged for Fall

Published

While Apple unveiled iOS 6 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and released the beta version of the software for developers today, the actual release of the operating system for consumers won’t arrive until the fall of 2012.

Apple, per usual, did not give the software an official release date only saying that the new operating system would be out later on this year.

This also points to the iPhone 5 coming this fall.

Last year, iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S were both released in October and it appears that Apple might be following the same release path in 2012.

iOS 6 will be coming with over 200 new features including an upgraded Siri assistant, deep Facebook integration, a new Maps application, and a whole lot more including features that Apple has yet to show off.

The software will be limited to the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S on the smartphone side of things and the iPad 2 and the third-generation iPad on the tablet side.

Owners of the fourth-generation iPod touch will be able to upgrade to iOS 6 as well.

Clearly, this is disappointing for original iPad owners and great news for iPhone 3GS owners, especially those who have been in possession of the device for all three years.

The release of the software this fall all but confirms that we won’t see the next iPhone until later on this year.

Apple’s next iPhone is rumored to feature 4G LTE data speeds, a larger display that might be 4-inches in size and a slimmer design that’s rumored to be under 8mm.
