Windows Phone 8 Launch Date Pegged for September

Published

on

The launch of Windows Phone 8 has been pegged for late September.

According to PocketNow, an internal memo from a Microsoft partner indicates that September 30th is the day that Microsoft may launch its next version of Windows Phone, Windows Phone 8 Apollo.

That date is a little odd considering it’s a Sunday but the report claims that it’s possible that Microsoft could have an embargo on the news up until midnight on September 30th which would mean that Windows Phone 8 launch info would then be pushed to the public on October 1st.

This launch date refers to the date when Microsoft will make it known when devices will finally become available to purchase, something that has been rumored to be taking place in November, just ahead of the holiday season and after the launch of the iPhone 5.

A Windows Phone 8 launch might happen on September 30th.

The iPhone 5 has been rumored to be launching on September 12th with a release coming in the third or fourth week of September, possibly on September 21st.

Windows Phone 8 is rumored to be reaching its RTM in September at the earliest which makes a final release in the month of November likely.

We still have yet to see a specific November release date rumored but it looks like we’ll have to wait until the end of September to hear one officially.

Microsoft has already taken the wraps off of some of Windows Phone 8 and it will likely reveal more when Nokia World arrives in the early part of September.

So it appears that Microsoft will indeed be falling back on its current lineup of phones until then as no current Windows Phone device will see the upgrade to Windows Phone 8.

Of course, none of Microsoft’s current Windows Phones will be getting Windows Phone 8. Instead, select Windows Phone devices that are out on shelves right now will be getting a stripped down version of Windows Phone 8 called Windows Phone 7.8 which will bring a limited number of features to the table, including Windows Phone 8′s new Start screen.

Nokia has confirmed Windows Phone 7.8 for all of its Lumia devices but as of yet, we haven’t heard of the software heading anywhere else.

American carriers that have already confirmed Windows Phone 8 devices include AT&T, Verizon, U.S. Cellular and T-Mobile. As for the hardware itself, Nokia, HTC, Samsung, and Huawei have all been confirmed to be making the hardware that will be be powered by Windows Phone 8.

Windows Phone 8 represents the biggest mobile update from Microsoft since the release of Windows Phone 7. Confirmed features so far include support for dual-core processors, support for more screen resolutions, NFC right out of the box and it will have Nokia Maps as the main maps app instead of Bing Maps which are currently found on Windows Phone handsets.
