iOS 6 Jailbreak Release May Not Come Until iOS 6.1

Published

“There won’t be a public iOS 6.0/6.0.1 untethered jailbreak.” claims iOS security Stefan Esser, better known as @i0n1c on Twitter.

Esser doesn’t offer further detail about his reasoning, but it is possible that any hackers capable of performing an iOS 6 jailbreak on the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S will hold the exploits until the iOS 6.1 release date in early 2013.

Esser’s claims come after months of iOS 6 jailbreak speculation including hints of progress on an untethered iPhone 5 jailbreak and many fake iOS 6 jailbreaks. iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS owners can perform a tethered iOS 6 jailbreak with Cydia.

The disappointing message comes right after Esser mocks followers of the DreamJailbreak twitter account. This is the official account of the Dream Jailbreak person or group which claims it plans an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak release for December 22nd. The group claims this iOS 6.0 jailbreak is compatible with iOS 6.0 and iOS 6.0.1 for all modern Apple devices capable of running iOS 6.

Dream Jailbreak says proof of an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak for the iPhone 5 is coming on Wednesday December 12th in the form of an uncut, un-edited video showing the iPhone 5 jailbreak process.

Claimed untethered iOS 6 jailbreak release slated for December 22.

The exploit for Dream Jailbreak is reportedly a userland exploit, which means Apple can easily fix it in the next version of iOS.

It’s important to note that Esser isn’t saying there is no iOS 6 jailbreak, just that he believes there will be no public release. The security experts that do achieve an iOS 6 jailbreak, could use it for private testing. Esser successfully completed an iOS 5.1 jailbreak but did not share it with the public. Esser has been pessimistic about the jailbreaking process during the hunt for an iPhone 4S jailbreak on iOS 5.

iOS 6 Jailbreak Status

We’ve seen progress on the iPhone 5 jailbreak and iOS 6 jailbreak over the past several months. On the first day, the iPhone 5 jailbreak was complete, but not ready for the public. The iPad mini and iPad 4th gen jailbreak process is also successful, but again, not ready for the public.

iPhone 5 jailbreak

Significant progress has been made on an iOS 6 jailbreak, but there’s been no public release.

The best news for an iOS 6 jailbreak is from October 19th when iOS hacker Planetbeing claimed the iPhone 5 jailbreak was almost complete, with two major caveats. First it is a tethered jailbreak and second it requires and Apple Developer account.

We haven’t heard anything about the iPhone 5 jailbreak progress from Planetbeing, but that could mean he is hard at work.

Based on what we know about the iOS 6 jailbreak progress and process, an iPhone 5 jailbreak would likely also work with the iPhone 4S and other Apple devices.

Stay tuned for the iOS 6 jailbreak proof which should be posted within the next day. After the release, expect opinions from the current Chronic Dev Team or iPhone Dev Team members.
