With the release of iOS 6.1 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, we have confirmation that the iOS 6.1 jailbreak is a success, rumors of a possible release and the go ahead to update with one catch.
The iOS 6.1 jailbreak will jailbreak all iOS 6.1 devices, including the Apple TV 2, but will not work on the Apple TV 3. This is an untethered iOS 6.1 jailbreak, so users can expect a full jailbreak experience.
Apple released iOS 6.1 today allowing the evad3rs iOS 6.1 jailbreak team to test their exploits on the final version of iOS 6.1 and according to @planetbeing, the exploits work, but much testing remains.

Earlier today @MuscleNerd teased an exciting week, which feeds into the prospect of a swift iOS 6.1 jailbreak release. Even as one of the members of the team talks about the iPhone 5 jailbreak release, @Planetbeing warns that there is still work to do and testing to take place before the release is
In terms of code, we have two proof of concepts that we need to merge and polish, so we will not be ready to release until that and testing. — planetbeing (@planetbeing) January 28, 2013
Safe to Update to iOS 6.1
It is safe for users looking to jailbreak their devices to update to iOS 6.1, but they should plug in to iTunes to update to iOS 6.1 instead of performing the update over the air.
If you people plan to upgrade to iOS 6.1 please don’t do an OTA upgrade. Please make a full restore using iTunes.

@pimskeks is not clear on if he means a normal iOS update in iTunes or an alternate method, but based on @MuscleNerd’s explanation of why this is important it appears to mean simply using iTunes to update to iOS 6.1.
