Intel Atom CPU Edges Early Victory Over Samsung Galaxy S4 in Benchmarks

Published

on

In an early benchmark test, the Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 is boasting an early victory over the highly coveted Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphoone, with the former using a dual-core Intel Atom Clover Trail+ processor and the latter powered by an ARM CPU. It’s unclear if the Galaxy S4 being tested is one that’s using Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa chipset or a variant made for LTE networks in the U.S. and UK bearing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU.

According to GSM Arena, “The benchmark test of the Lenovo K900 reveals that the smartphone is a touch ahead of Samsung Galaxy S4 and the K900 is surely one of the fastest smartphone in the current market.”

With the Galaxy S4 previously declared as the fastest Android phone yet, this is a significant victory and milestone for Intel, which is trying to still make headway into the mobile space that’s largely dominated by processors built around ARM Holdings’ designs.

The early victory against ARM’s next generation of processors is a solid early victory for Intel as it is using a dual-core CPU design to combat ARM’s quad-core designs. The Exynos 5 has 4 power cores and 4 more conservative cores–at any given time, depending on the workload, either the power cores or the conservative cores would be fired, so despite having 8 total cores as part of the ARM big.LITTLE architecture, the Exynos 5 Octa is actually a quad-core architecture that’s designed around performance and battery optimization. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 is a quad-core CPU that’s an update to the current Snapdragon S4 Pro processors.

The dual-core Intel Atom CPU inside the IdeaPhone K900 is clocked at 2 GHz. The phone was shown earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas whereas the Samsung Galaxy S4 was more recently unveiled at an event last month in New York.

It says that it is a quad-core, why does the article say it is a dual-core

Well it is x86 Instruction set :P which is not optimized for Android ! Android uses ARM Instruction set so it may look high performance but you wont have real world performance ( such as lag when playing games)

Google ported Android to use X86 instruction set a while back.

Android can run natively on both ARM and x86. Most Android apps are pure Java, so architecture doesn’t matter. Some apps, though, use native code as well, but developers just need to compile it for x86 as well. Only the apps that use native code _and_ haven’t been compiled for x86 will run in ARM emulation mode, which has overhead.

Lets wait until the real users get their hands on those phones. I’m still getting myself an S4 when it goes out. The software goodies that comes with it is the real deal, not just some benchmark score.

I wish the Euro version of the S4 phone would be available in the states. There is nothing I use that requires anything more than a 3G connection. 4G drains battery life quick and though it loads stuff a little faster the difference is negligible in real life usage

welll as you can see , the score of s4 is a tad below 25k….. which is approximately equal to the 23.6k score of the snapdragon version of s4……the exynos version has an anttutu score above 27k….

alreddy seen the gs4 withuot pre software. it had a score of 26800 (it was the quad core chip from qualcoom not the octa core)

Until I see an external and unbiased test I won’t be considering removing the GS4 from my WishPlz list ( https://bit.ly/XRexQQ )

Well, the Exynos 5 Octa still beats this and is of course 1 of d most energy efficient chips around! Intel still has a long way 2 go in d mobile devices arena! In the mobile SOC market, ARM is Intel and Intel is AMD at best!
