The iPad mini 2 with a Retina Display will reportedly arrive in the fourth quarter, delivering a small but high-resolution display to compete with the Nexus 7 and it may also come in a variety of color options

iPad mini 2 rumors go back and forth on a new iPad mini with a Retina Display, and just yesterday it came to light that Apple was testing an iPad mini 2 without a Retina Display.

The current iPad mini uses a 1024 x 768 resolution display that pales in comparison to the 2048 x 1536 resolution found on the iPad 4 Retina Display and to the 1920 x 1200 resolution on the new Nexus 7 tablet.

The higher resolution delivers sharper looking text and photos where users cannot see the individual pixels on the screen, something Apple sacrificed to deliver the iPad mini at a $329 price last year, but may be in the process of fixing for the iPad mini 2.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the iPad mini 2 release is set for the fourth quarter of 2013, which begins on October 1st, and is not to be confused with Apple’s Q4 2013 which ends on September 28th. Citing “people familiar with the matter” the report claims Apple suppliers are preparing high-resolution Retina Displays for the iPad mini 2.

The iPad mini 2 Retina Display will reportedly come from Samsung, LG Display and Sharp. Apple’s attempts to break ties to Samsung seem to be on hold to make sure 7.9-inch Retina Display panel shortages do not get in the way of an iPad mini 2 release this year.

This report adds to the news that Apple is switching from one of the main suppliers for the iPad mini to Samsung, apparently because Samsung is one of a few companies that can deliver the iPad mini 2 Retina Display panels in enough quality and quantity.

iPad mini 2 in Colors

In this report we also hear Apple is considering selling the iPad mini 2 in multiple color options. The iPad mini is currently available in black and white. The source does not specify any color options, but it is likely that Apple would stick with the colors of the iPod touch line shown below, or match rumored iPhone 5S color options.

While consumers enjoy color options for the iPod touch line, it’s not clear if the rumored iPad mini 2 color options will come to market, or if it is just an idea Apple is experimenting with.

This report also points to an iPad mini 2 design that is much the same as the current iPad mini. This is not a shock as Apple recycled the iPad design in previous years, similar to the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S release we expect this year as well.
