iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5s: Video Shows Detailed Comparison

Published

The iPhone 6 release date likely won’t land until the fall but a new video offers prospective buyers an early look at what the iPhone 6 could look like next to the iPhone 5s.

As the year pushes on, we continue to hear more and more about Apple’s supposed plans for the iPhone. Rumors point to an upcoming iPhone 6, a device that is expected to bring a number of upgrades including a larger display than the 4-inch Retina Display currently found on Apple’s flagship, the iPhone 5s.

Recently, we’ve begun to see supposed iPhone 6 mockups emerge, mockups that allegedly show off what could be the design that Apple uses with its upcoming 2014 iPhone. All of these mockups show a redesigned iPhone that matches what we’ve seen emerge from the extremely active iPhone 6 rumor mill.

The latest leak from 9to5Mac and it shows alleged iPhone 6 mockups, or dummy units, next to Apple’s current iPhone, the iPhone 5s. The mockups appear in both gold and space gray, two of the color options introduced with last year’s iPhone 5s, and they maintain the design that we’ve seen leak numerous times in recent days.

These alleged iPhone 6 dummy units are larger than the iPhone 5s. iPhone 6 rumors universally suggest an increase in screen size with reports pointing to 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models. The dummy unit seen here is likely based on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 because it doesn’t dwarf the 4-inch iPhone 5s.

Again, we see the possible iPhone 6 design changes that we’ve heard about over and over again. These mockups feature a Lightning port, a power button that rests on the side of the device instead of on the top, and rounded volume keys. They closely resemble the iPod touch fifth-generation, a device that is much slimmer than the iPhone 5s. The iPod touch is 6mm thin while the iPhone 5s is 7.6mm thin.

The iPhone 6 may be thinner with more room for components thanks to a larger overall size.

Design rumors also suggest Apple could deliver an iPhone 6 that is up to 26% thinner than the iPhone 5s. A recent leak from Ukrainian website suggests Apple is aiming for a smartphone as thin as 6mm, but Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities believes a 6.5 – 7mm thickness is easier for Apple to achieve.

In a note shared by MacRumors, Kuo also says that he believes that the iPhone 6 will come with a power button on right and narrower bezels. This lines up with what we see here on this mockup. Kuo accurately predicted many of the iPhone 5s’ features before its launch last September so his information is considered more credible than most.

The video also shows an alleged case that could be for the upcoming iPhone 6. The case fits this alleged iPhone 6 mockup, lending credibility to the dimensions on board.

An iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display will likely be bigger than the iPhone 5s and iPhone 4s.

This new leak comes shortly after a number of suspected iPhone 6 photos leaked to the surface, offering an up close and personal look at how the device could look next to the iPhone 5s and the HTC One M8. The leak produced 90 images that give prospective buyers one of the more intensive looks at the possible iPhone 6 design.

Keep in mind, these leaked iPhone 6 mockups are said to be based on accurate information but there is always a chance that they are not based on the actual iPhone 6 design. In 2012, a leak and sources pointed to a iPhone 5 with a teardrop design and one case company produced a large batch of iPhone cases based on this leak and their sources. The iPhone 5, of course, did not arrive with a tear drop design.

As we push deeper into 2014, iPhone 6 rumors are starting to firm up. Current rumors point to two different iPhone 6 models. One model is said to be between 4.5-inches and 4.7-inches in size, similar to the mockup seen here. The other iPhone 6 is thought to be somewhere around 5.5-inches or 5.7-inches. Both are said to have full HD resolution.

The biggest iPhone 6 leak so far comes from the well-sourced Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. He sees the iPhone 6 possessing a number of upgrades including:

  • iPhone 6 Screen Size and Resolution – 4.7- inch (1334 x 750) 5.5-inch (1920 x 1080).
  • iPhone 6 Release Dates – 4.7-inch in September, 5.5-inch in Holiday season.
  • iPhone 6 Design – Power button on right, narrower bezels, larger iPhone 6 as two-hands needed.
  • iPhone 6 Camera – No major Megapixel bump, but added image stability.
  • iPhone 6 Specs – A8, 1GB RAM, Touch ID, 6.5mm to 7mm thickness, NFC.

iPhone 6 release date rumors all point to an arrival this fall with reports pegging August and September as possible release months. A specific date still hasn’t been nailed down but Apple typically manages to keep that a secret until a few weeks before the actual event.

Apple is expected to take the stage on June 2nd at WWDC 2014 and announce its new iOS 8 update. While we could see a new iPhone make an appearance at the event, rumors point to an arrival later in the year, perhaps after an iOS 8 beta.

I would rather have an iPhone, than a Samsung, however, I have large hands and I’m visually impaired. So the best choice for thus far has been Samsung Note 3, and now Samsung 5 is just as big as the Note. iPhone coming out with a larger phone is nice, but what about their camera and picture taking features? Will keep my eye out for more information, before going back to iPhone.
