iPhone 6 Design: 5 Beautiful Details

Published

on

The iPhone 6 design is all new for 2014, and we’re here to show you what the new iPhone looks like based on the most reliable leaks and rumors using an iPhone 6 mock-up from China. This iPhone 6 does not turn on, but it is made based on leaked iPhone 6 designs and it even fits in iPhone 6 cases from a top case manufacturer.

If you want to know what the iPhone 6 looks like, here’s a look at the iPhone 6 design that case companies believe Apple is ready to show off next month, and how it may change slightly before the iPhone 6 release date.

We’ll focus on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, but there is also a rumored 5.5-inch iPhone 6 that offers a larger screen. Other than a bigger display and a different parts inside to match the larger size it should share the same overall iPhone 6 design.

Apple should unveil the iPhone 6 design on stage in early or mid-September, and we could see the iPhone 6 release date on September 19th according to many reports.

Here is a closer look at the iPhone 6 design based on multiple leaks and rumors, and what you can expect the new iPhone to look like when Apple finally announces it.

iPhone 6 With More Metal

The iPhone 6 design includes more metal than the iPhone 5s, ditching the glass top and bottom parts on the back of the phone for a full metal back cover with a cut out Apple logo that may be used to help the iPhone communicate. The iPhone 6 mock-up shown in this article uses this new design as do many alleged iPhone 6 back plates that show a new design for the larger iPhone.

The design is more like the iPod touch, which uses all metal across the back, or the iPad Air which uses a similar design. The new iPhone 6 design is a fresh look for the iPhone, and in line with Apple’s tradition of moving to a new look every two years.

Look for the same overall iPhone 6 design across the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models. Leaks show that internal parts are likely different to accommodate the larger size.

Curved Edges

Instead of beveled edges like the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, the iPhone 6 design includes curved edges that wrap from the front of the phone to the back. A leaked iPhone 6 front cover includes curved edges that will likely match up to the curve of the metal for a seamless edge.

This shows the curved iPhone 6 edges compared to an iPhone 5.

We don’t expect a curved iPhone 6 display, merely curved glass or Sapphire at the edge. the iPhone 6 design used on the mock-up fits in our hand well. The curve is something we see on the Spigen iPhone 6 cases that arrived last week. Spigen correctly predicted the Nexus 5 design ahead of release and plans to start selling iPhone 6 cases as soon as Apple releases the device based on the cases already being on Amazon and our time with these finished cases.

The curved edges now include redesigned volume buttons and a new power button placement as well. The gallery above shows more iPhone 6 design comparisons including the size of the iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s.

One Hand Use Possible

Using the iPhone 6 with one hand is still possible based on our simulated iPhone 6 usage. We’ll need to give a full hands-on with the actual iPhone 6 to say 100%, but with a 4.7-inch display, slim, bezels and curved edges it is possible to hold the iPhone 6 in one hand and reach most of the screen. This is common on 4.7-inch smartphones like the HTC One and similar sizes like the Galaxy S4.

Simulated usage shows this iPhone 6 design is small enough and easy enough to hold for one-hand use.

Apple also moved the power button from the top to the right edge, directly in line with the volume up button. This placement makes it easier to press while holding the phone with one hand. Samsung uses a similar layout on the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3, and it really does help the one-handed use.

Sapphire Display Rumors Continue

Sapphire is a big part of the iPhone 6 design according to most rumors which suggest Apple plans to put a Sapphire front panel on the new iPhone. Sapphire is extremely durable, so your keys won’t scratch it, but it is also tough to manufacture so some rumors suggest not all iPhone 6 designs include it.

The video above shows how thin an iPhone 6 front panel could be with Sapphire and how much abuse it can take. If Apple includes this on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 the screen should stay looking like new better than the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.

Goodbye to Ugly Lines

The iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s video below shows the iPhone 6 mock-up with ugly lines on the back of the device. This is something we see on all the mock-ups, but one report claims the lines are not part of the final design. They may only be there to let engineers know where something is, or they may simply shrink on the finished product.

In the video we also look at the iPhone 6 mock-up compared to the new HTC One, which also uses a metal design and breaks for communication. The HTC One M8 shows how Apple’s iPhone 6 design could look much nicer before the release.

Inside of a new iPhone 6 design expect to see a new Apple A8 processor, a new camera and a Touch ID sensor that delivers new features with iOS 8. We don’t know yet if Apple plans to announce the iPhone 6 with a 5.5-inch display at the same time as the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. 9 Exciting iPhone 6 Rivals

iPhone 5s

iPhone 5s

The iPhone 6 is clearly on its way to replace the iPhone 5s but that doesn't mean that the iPhone 5s is simply going to fade into darkness. No, there is a good chance that Apple will keep the iPhone 5s around and if it does, it will almost certainly be put on shelves with a cheaper price tag.

Apple's current iPhone lineup has the iPhone 5s at $199.99, iPhone 5c at $99 and iPhone 4s for free on-contract. It's not clear how the iPhone 6 will fit in though rumors suggest we could see the 5.5-inch model slot in at $299.99 with the smaller iPhone 6 at the iPhone 5s' price point.

Whatever the case, the iPhone 5s will almost certainly drop in price making it a legitimate iPhone 6 rival. Its hardware is still solid, its getting iOS 8 and more, and it remains one of the best smartphones on the market nearly a year after its release.

I love how you say “Goodbye to ugly lines” when the lines on the “iPhone 6” are WAY uglier. The iPhone 5S looks way better, and I hope that the real iPhone 6 looks nothing like this piece of crap.

Not having much fun playing with the features of this phone. I just wanted to see if I liked the screen lock password function. Now I find I don’t have the option to undo it. Maybe someone can assist me with this?
