Now that Google’s officially announced and confirmed Android 5.0 Lollipop, users and developers alike are waiting for it to start arriving on their handsets. And while we wait for carriers and manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola to quickly issue updates, those with the Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 can get it starting tomorrow.

Yesterday Google made a trio of announcements with its all-new Nexus 6 smartphone, Nexus 9 tablet, and the new and improved Android 5.0 Lollipop OS they’re running. And while that’s great news, Google was quick to confirm many Nexus devices would see an update “in the coming weeks”.

Back in June Google first debuted the all-new Android L release, and even delivered an early developer preview for the Nexus 5 and 7. Giving users and developers early access months ahead of the release. We can also confirm the same will be happening now that Android 5.0 is in the final stages, and the same “preview builds” will be available starting tomorrow, October 17th.

For most, in order to get your hands on the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop software update you’ll need to get a new Nexus 9 tablet, or the Nexus 6 smartphone once it arrives in early November, but if you have the Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 it will be available starting tomorrow.

Of course, this isn’t the regular over the air update, and even Nexus 5 or 7 owner won’t get it. Instead, you’ll have to flash the developer preview build which will be made available tomorrow by Google. This will wipe your device and all content on it, but you’ll have the latest release weeks ahead of everyone else.

The tweet above comes from the official Android Developers Twitter account. Confirming the final Android 5.0 release SDK and preview builds will be released tomorrow. This is excellent news, even if this isn’t for the masses and regular smartphone owners.

This means the version of Android 5.0 “L” developers have had access to since June will be updated to the latest stable build of the official Android 5.0 Lollipop release. Likely in order to let developers start tweaking and improving their apps to fully support the Android 5.0 update before it starts globally rolling out in late October.

Regular users will want to wait for the official over-the-air update (OTA) which should be coming in the next few weeks. That is the update which you’ll be able to accept once notified on your Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Google Play Edition devices, and update without losing any data. The version mentioned above is a stock Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 Android 5.0 build, or image, and will completely erase all user data and information once flashed. This is for advanced users only.

Again, this is aimed at developers looking to prepare for the Android 5.0 release, but if you’d like to wipe your smartphone or tablet and get the latest Android 5.0 release early, tomorrow will be the day. We’ll update once it arrives with links, more details, and a quick how to for those interested.

Google has tons of new changes in Android 5.0 Lollipop that users will likely enjoy. From a completely revamped notification system complete with do not disturb features and customizations, a new keyboard, improved security, better performance and battery life, and over 5,000 new API’s for developers to access and improve their apps, games, and services.
