LG G Watch R Release Date Arrives in the US

Published

on

Back in August LG announced a brand new smartwatch running Google’s Android Wear operating system aimed at buyers waiting for the Moto 360. It’s called the LG G Watch R (for Round) and after months of waiting it is now finally available in the United States.

When Google first announced Android Wear earlier this year buyers were instantly excited about the Moto 360 for its round design, but a new rival is here to take over your wrist, and it’s fully round. Currently the LG G Watch, Gear Live, and Moto 360 are available, but LG’s new round watch called the LG G Watch R hit the Google Play Store yesterday, and is available from a few other sources.

While the initial announcement didn’t share pricing or a release date, thanks to a slip in the official LG German Press Release we knew it was coming in Q4, but earlier this week AT&T confirmed it would be available today, and as expected, the LG G Watch R can be purchased through AT&T.

LG’s brand new G Watch R takes a more traditional approach to a watch, with a round and bulky sporty design, rather than the squared Sci-Fi look of the original. It’s aimed directly at the Moto 360, which is the most popular Android Wear smartwatch, only it featured a full round display. The Moto 360 has a “flat-tire” look with a line at the bottom of the circle.

The LG G Watch R features a fully round plasic P-OLED display, reportedly the first of its kind, has a large 410 mAh battery to last for more than an entire day on your wrist, and runs the latest Android Wear OS.

After months of waiting early this week it finally hit Google Play as the most expensive smartwatch to date, coming in at $299. This is $49 more than the competing Moto 360, a watch which recently received multiple new colors, leather straps, and an all metal option for a similar $299 price point.

The LG G Watch R is also exclusively available in the United States from AT&T, as we mentioned above, but those were only online pre-orders which opened up on Wednesday. Starting tomorrow, November 8th, you’ll be able to get the impressive new round smartwatch in stores for the same $299 price, or with a discount if you buy a new smartphone on contract, like the Moto X.

The new LG G Watch R also features a fully dust and water-resistant IP67 rating, so it’s safe for swimming and in the shower, and is a durable sporty looking smartwatch that just so happens to also be smart.

The LG G Watch R has been available for a short time outside of the US, and so far initial impressions have been rather favorable. If it’s worth the $50 price increase over the $249 Moto 360, we’re not sure, but buyers will be able to decide themselves in AT&T stores tomorrow.
