Assassin’s Creed Unity Problems Plague Release

It might be a good idea for everyone to hold off on purchasing Assassin’s Creed Unity for the Xbox One and PS4. Reports of major Assassin’s Creed Unity problems are flooding social networking sites like Reddit.

Assassin’s Creed Unity arrived on store shelves early this morning, but only in the last four hours or so have the full extent of the game’s issues become clear. Apparently, the same Assassin’s Creed Unity problems are plaguing every version of the game.

The most egregious issue seems to be frame rates. Early this year Ubisoft Montreal confirmed that they’d locked the maximum resolution of the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Assassin’s Creed Unity to 900p. At the time many speculated that this was done for nefarious reasons. Ubisoft said it was so that it could guarantee everyone the same experience because of all the lighting and things going on in Paris, the open-world game’s setting.

Almost everyone is reporting issues when it comes to frame rates. There’s a thread about Assassin’s Creed Unity problems at Reddit that indicates the whelming majority of users are seeing frame rates dip heavily in the game.

“This isn’t exaggeration. That game stutters and is very choppy on all the platforms now. To the point of distraction and playability in some areas. That and the server issues they are having lends this to a horrible launch experience,” Reddit user redwing_frank says. Later posts in the thread back up his claims.

It gets worse than that though. The issue on frame rates crops up in each one of the Assassin’s Creed Unity reviews that were published this morning. Polygon’s Arthur Gies says that there were times where Assassin’s Creed Unity’s frame rate dipped into the single digits during gameplay. For reference, Assassin’s Creed Unity should be running steadily at about 30 frames per second. When a game’s frame rate dips below where it should be, the game appears to stutter onscreen, almost as if it’s freezing. With a frame rate in the single digits Assassin’s Creed Unity would be utterly unplayable.

There’s more Assassin’s Creed Unity problems to worry about other than that frame rate though. Polygon’s review also indicated there were a few maddening bugs still left in the experience. It mainly pointed to issues climbing and descending buildings. GameInformer’s review goes a step further.

“Inordinately long load times, repeated onscreen notifications, and a couple of hard freezes prove that Unity is a complex game that hasn’t yet had all of its bugs smashed,” GameInformer says. The outlet goes on to recommend that users purchase the game if they’re fans of the series, but indicates the game is in dire need of a patch. One issue the outlet found actually prevented them from pulling out their weapons. Others have reported that they and their allies keep falling  through the game’s terrain with no logical explanation.

To be fair, Assassin’s Creed Unity is a complete rethinking of what the franchise can be. Ubisoft has gone on record saying that it redesigned a lot of the core game for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. There were always going to be some issues, at least, if you’re judging by Ubisoft’s track record in delivering a completely working game on launch day. Still, it’s a shame that such a key game this holiday season doesn’t seem to be delivering on a usable, cohesive first-day experience. Both Microsoft and Sony needed this game to attract upgrades to their next-generation consoles. Microsoft has two Xbox One bundles that include access to Assassin’s Creed Unity at no additional charge.
