2015 Amiibo Releases: Smash Bros, Animal Crossing & More

Published

on

To Nintendo and its users, Amiibo figures are a brave attempt to grab hold of the future. Nintendo has long-held the most family friendly-friendly, memorable and versatile stable of characters. Mario, Luigi, Pokémon, Samus, all are instantly recognizable to millions of gamers – old and new a like. It seems inevitable that Nintendo would smarten up and figure out a way to capitalize on the general love for the characters they’ve created over the years. Amiibo isn’t just a toy line, it’s a celebration of the protagonists and antagonists of gaming’s Golden Age, all created by Nintendo.

Make no mistake, Amiibo is still a toy line, and a very interesting one at that. Amiibo are bite-size figures that come equipped with NFC or near field communication technology. The NFC chip in each Amiibo figure communicates to a base, unlocking in-game add-ons and new experiences that users wouldn’t be able to get otherwise. Nintendo began selling the Amiibo figures a long time ago, but the fall gaming season will usher in a new wave of Amiibo releases.

Accessories & Compatibility

Besides launching new Amiibo figures in the fall and winter, Nintendo has plans to expand its empire. Today, Amiibo figures are only compatible with two of Nintendo’s consoles: The Nintendo Wii U gaming system for the living room and the new Nintendo 3DS XL for those who like to game on the go. Nintendo plans to extend that with a few new accessories and a new device.

Coming this September is the $19.99 Nintendo NFC Reader/Writer Accessory. Made specifically for the Nintendo 3DS, it’ll allow users to drop Amiibo figures into their games just like the new Nintendo 3DS XL. Nintendo says the accessory is compatible with the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS X and the Nintendo 2DS. Amazon has these readers available for users to pre-order ahead of their September 25th release date.

The New Nintendo 3DS

The New Nintendo 3DS

Also launching on September 25th is the new Animal Crossing: Home Designer New Nintendo 3DS bundle. $219 gets shoppers a digital copy of the game, two face-plates and a New Nintendo 3DS that can read Amiibo figures without extra accessories and fits more comfortably in small hands. GameStop has pre-orders for it running now. Nintendo’s updated roadmap hasn’t made it clear yet which figures will have Animal Crossing: Home Designer support and what that support will look like.

The Nintendo NFC Reader/Writer will allow users to load in-game content using their Amiibo figures or the new Amiibo cards that are set to launch this year too. Theoretically, Amiibo Cards will be easier to come by than Amiibo figures. The first pack of these cards will be the Animal Crossing Amiibo upgrades on September 25th.

Good luck with the 2015 Amiibo releases.
