LG G Flex 2: 5 Things You Need to Know

Published

on

Following on the success of the LG G Flex curved smartphone released last year, today at CES 2015 in Las Vegas LG Mobile just announced the all-new and improved LG G Flex 2. Over the past few days reports, rumors, and leaked have talked about this phone, but now that it’s official here’s 5 things buyers should know.

In late 2013 LG revealed its first curved smartphone with a P-OLED plastic display meant to handle wear and tear, and also bend if necessary making it a rather interesting device. The phone eventually was fully revealed and released in early 2014, and now over a year later a slimmer, faster, better LG G Flex 2 is about to head to market.

As expected, today LG took the wraps off of this 5.5-inch curved display smartphone running the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop and a 64-bit 8-core processor. It’s one powerful smartphone, and here’s everything you need to know.

The device unveiled today is a mix between the impressive LG G3 that was released and highly popular last year, and whatever we can expect to see from LG in 2015. It has a similar design as the G3, only much improved specs across the board similar to what we’re expecting in flagship smartphones from most manufacturers this year.

The new G Flex 2 comes with a better display, slimmer design, improved features, and some added tools to take use of the curved display, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and much more more. Here’s the details worth knowing.

Display

Following a similar approach as last year the LG G Flex 2 has a curved P-OLED 5.5-inch display, only this year it will be even better. LG has improved the screen to a full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution, as well as improved the technology for a more clear image. The original G Flex had screen issues, ghosting, and some lines after being bent, but that should all be resolved with the new version unveiled this morning.

The plastic OLED display isn’t like the glass on current smartphones, and is a scratch resistant yet flexible plastic for durability, and of course to let the display bend if needed. The G Flex can be sat on in pants pockets and more, and curve (to an extent) without breaking or having ill effects. It’s an interesting approach, and one we should see more of from others later this year.

8-core Processor & Android 5.0 Lollipop

While specs aren’t everything, the new LG G Flex 2 supports the latest and greatest technology for mobile devices across the board. From a curved display, to the new 2.0 Ghz 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor. Yes, that is an Octa-core processor with 8 cores, 2GB of DDR4 RAM, and full 64-bit support for Android 5.0 Lollipop.

This is the first smartphone to be released (or announced) with the new Snapdragon 810 Octa-core processor, one of many we expect to be unveiled over the first half of 2015. This makes it one of the most powerful smartphones released to date, with an added benefit of having a curved display to boot. It’s an interesting smartphone, and we’ll be sure to get hands-on with it as soon as possible.

Release on AT&T and Sprint

This morning two carriers in the United States wasted no time and instantly revealed plans to carry this impressive new smartphone. Those being both AT&T and Sprint, although they weren’t able to reveal release dates or pricing.

AT&T didn’t have much to say, but confirmed they’ll be offering the G Flex 2 later this year. That being said, Sprint confirmed the new LG G Flex 2 will be on its network before the end of the first quarter of 2015, meaning we can expect it to arrive within the next 2-3 months.

The first quarter of 2015 ends on March 31st, which is well ahead of when we’re expecting to see the new LG G4, or smartphones from many other manufacturers, so the LG G Flex 2 may be the first flagship smartphone released in 2015.

Specs

The full specs are rather impressive, but the phone will instantly remind you of an improved LG G3 with a curved display and a few other features. Here’s the full rundown for those interested.

  • 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD Curved Display
  • 2.0 GHz Octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor with 2GB of RAM
  • 16/32GB of storage and micro-SD support
  • 13 Megapixel OIS+ rear camera with laser auto focus, 2.1 front camera
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop with 64-bit support (thanks to Snapdragon 810)
  • 3,000 mAh built-in battery
  • Size: 149.1 x 75.3 x 7.1-9.4mm
  • Rear facing buttons
  • more

Quick Charge

Qualcomm has continued to improve battery technology in their chipsets and processors, rather than waiting for battery technology itself to actually improve. With the LG G Flex 2 and the Snapdragon 810, Qualcomm Quick Charge (called Fast Charge by LG) allows the embedded 3,000mAh battery in the G Flex2 — the only curved mobile battery in the world to be charged up to 50 percent in under 40 minutes.

This means that once your battery is getting low, just 30-40 minutes on the charger can get you nearly 50% battery life. Similar to the Nexus 6 or Galaxy Note 4 quick charge features.

With a large 3,000 mAh battery the G Flex 2 should have pretty good battery life already, but those enjoying all it has to offer won’t have to worry about running out of battery. A few minutes attached to a wall should give you plenty of battery to get you through the rest of the day. This will be a feature in most smartphones released in 2015, and again, LG has beat most of the competition to the punch.

Final Thoughts

Just like the LG G Flex from last year and even the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge released in late 2014, this new G Flex 2 is more of a niche product than anything. Showcasing the new technology available from LG, Qualcomm, and others in the mobile space. That all being said, it is still a premium high end Android smartphone with the latest and greatest options, and should be a great option once it arrives in the next few months.

Again, for now it appears that both AT&T and Sprint will offer the new curved smartphone, but we’re expecting others to join in the near future, and we’ll update once we know more.
