Apple Watch Rumors Heat Up with Companion App Leak

Published

on

More details about the Apple Watch are incoming, thanks to a leak that shows off the Apple Watch companion app that iPhone users will use with their new smartwatch.

9to5Mac got their hands on the Apple Watch Companion app, which reveals some nifty new features that let you customize the Apple Watch and change its settings right from your iPhone.

Some of the features include the ability to organize apps on the Apple Watch home screen right on your iPhone using the app, as you can drag-and-drop Apple Watch apps around into different positions, that way you don’t have to do it on that tiny screen.

The app will also allow users to change around settings with the clock, as well as notifications and messages, where users can customize how audio messages are recorded and change how notifications appear on the Apple Watch.

The Companion also includes the option for setting up a four-digit passcode, which is required in order to use Apple Pay with the watch. However, you can unlock the watch simply by unlocking your iPhone, so there’s no need to have to unlock both devices separately, which is definitely a good thing.

There’s also some built-in health and fitness features in the Apple Watch, including the ability to set reminders to stand up if you’ve been sitting too long, as well as notifications consisting of activity progress every couple of hours.

We saw hints of an Apple Watch app a couple of days ago when the fourth beta to iOS 8.2 was released, coming with a little message talking about the “Apple Watch app.” At that point, we weren’t sure what that consisted of exactly, but today’s news sheds a little light on what we can expect when the smartwatch finally releases.

Of course, the Apple Watch app isn’t yet available for anyone, but we’re guessing we’ll see it pop up to developers as we get closer and closer to the release date of iOS 8.2 and the Apple Watch.

iOS 8.2 will be a rather big update, mostly because it will be the first iOS 8 update to support the Apple Watch, as the betas have included the WatchKit software development kit thus far, allowing developers to create apps for the new wearable.

iOS 8 will also be the first version of iOS since 2010 to include a x.2 update, with the last time being on iOS 4 when Apple released iOS 4.2 as an update.

However, it doesn’t like iOS 8.2 will be a very big update as far as new features and changes are concerned. The biggest new thing will be Apple Watch support, but that will obviously only be aimed at users who buy an Apple Watch when it eventually releases early this year.

However, we should expect the update to fix a lot of bugs and hopefully improve performance overall, especially on older iOS devices like the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2, which are the oldest iOS devices that support iOS 8.

For the most part, though, iOS 8.2 will mostly be aimed at the Apple Watch, which we can expect to arrive in March at some point, according to several rumors that all agree upon that time frame.
