Mophie iPhone 6 Case Mini Review: What’s New

Published

on

The Mophie iPhone 6 case options include three cases with a varying battery power and protection — and a marked upgrade in features from the juice pack air and juice pack plus cases on your older iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.

After spending time going hands-on with the Mophie iPhone 6 juice pack air, iPhone 6 juice pack plus and iPhone 6 Plus juice pack it is clear that these are the iPhone 6 battery cases that set the standard for portable iPhone power thanks to upgrades and new features.

Mophie offers the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus battery cases starting at $99 and up to $119 for the iPhone 6 juice pack plus that adds extra protection and battery life to the battery case that you won’t find on an entry-level juice pack or juice pack air.

This mini review of the new Mophie iPhone 6 cases highlights three important upgrades.

All of the new cases are available in three colors to match the iPhone 6 color options Apple sells and while they do add bulk to the slim iPhone 6 the curved design makes even the larger Mophie iPhone 6 Plus case fit in our hand easily.

The Mophie iPhone 6 cases are available for pre-order now and will ship near the end of January or early February 2015 starting at $99.

Here are three new features or changes to the Mophie iPhone 6 cases that set these cases apart from earlier generations.

Better USB Port & Cable

The Mophie iPhone 6 cases include an improved USB port that is cleaner looking and should help make it easier to plug in the Micro USB charging cable.

The USB port is cleaner and contacts connect the case and your iPhone 6 with accessories.

Mophie also told us that there is a new cable that will also help users know which side is up when it comes time to plug-in for more power.

There are still contacts at the bottom of the case that will allow users to charge the Mophie iPhone 6 case in dock on a desk and in a car dock. These accessories connect using contacts on the bottom edge of the case so you don’t need to fumble with wires.

One Cable to Sync and Charge

One of the biggest complaints about the older Mophie iPhone cases is that you cannot sync the iPhone when it is in the case, which limits more than just connecting to iTunes and leads to users removing the case and carrying a lightning cable in addition to a Micro USB cable.

You can sync with the Mophie iPhone 6 case on, something that wasn't possible on older versions.

Like the Mophie powerstation plus, the Mophie iPhone 6 case supports pass-through to let users charge and sync the iPhone while in the case and with the same Micro USB cable it ships with. You can leave the Lightning cable at home and use this one cable while on the go.

This also allows cars to detect the iPhone just like if it was plugged in to a Lightning cable. This makes it easier to listen to music and is essential for using the Mophie iPhone 6 cases with Apple CarPlay. We also like that the system will charge the iPhone 6 first when connected to power, and then the case.

This technology is in both of the new iPhone 6 Mophie cases and in the Mophie iPhone 6 Plus juice pack.

Enhanced Protection

The Mophie iPhone 6 juice pack plus packs in 120% battery life, but that’s not the only trick this case offers. There is a new high-impact protection system built-in to this case that uses bumpers to absorb the shock from drops to protect the iPhone 6 from bigger drops.

This is only in the $119 Mophie iPhone 6 case option. We could not test this out, but similar bumper protection designs on other cases result in good performance and we look forward to testing the Mophie iPhone 6 case in more detail in the coming months.

So your’e excited they added pass through charging, it can sync, they fixed their broken USB port issue, an they added some rubber and made it green so it looks special. That sets the standard? Really?

Cases from other quality battery case companies have had these features for years. Buy a PhoneSuit
