200GB Micro SD Offers Massive Storage Option for Android

A new super-storage option from SanDisk arrives just as Samsung decides to remove the Galaxy S6 Micro SD card slot on what will likely be one of the best-selling Android phones of the year. This new 200GB MicroSD card is the highest capacity Micro SD card available with room for up to 20 hours of full HD video on removable memory no bigger than a fingernail.

The focus of the 200GB SanDisk Ultra Micro SDXC card is clearly focused on mobile users who need storage for photos and videos. While there is no Galaxy S6 Micro SD card slot the new HTC One M9 includes a slot that this high-capacity Micro SD card will slide into expanding to the storage to well past the 128GB option that Samsung offers.

SanDisk tells Gotta Be Mobile that while many Android smartphones only list a maximum of 128GB Micro SD card storage this should work in most existing smartphones without an update. The 128GB maximum represented the top capacity offered at the time, not a hardware or software limit. That means users who want to add more storage to the HTC One M9, LG G3, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 and other devices with a Micro SD card slot should be able to use this new 200GB Micro SD card to do just that.

The new 200GB Micro SD card arrives right as the most popular Android phone series drops Micro SD card support.

“Mobile devices are completely changing the game. Seven out of 10 images captured by consumers are now from smartphones and tablets. Consumers view mobile-first devices as their primary means for image capture and sharing, and by 2019 smartphones and tablets will account for nine out of 10 images captured,” said Christopher Chute, Vice President, Worldwide Digital Imaging Practice, IDC in a press release announcing the new 200GB Micro SD card. “As the needs of mobile users continue to change, SanDisk is on the forefront of delivering solutions for these demands as is clearly illustrated through their growing portfolio of innovative products, including the new 200GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card.”

The 200GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card doesn’t just offer a lot of storage, it is a speedy storage solution as well. SanDisk claims the 200GB Micro SD card can transfer at 90MB/s which will allow consumers to, “move up to 1,200 photos per minute.”

SanDisk includes an Android app that can help users manage storage options. The updated Memory Zone app includes an OptiMem feature that will automatically transfer old photos and videos to the Micro SD card when the phone’s internal storage falls below a certain level.

The 200GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card features a 10 year limited warranty. The 200GB SanDisk Micro SD card release date is planned for Q2 2015 and the retail price is a whopping $399. The price will likely come in a little lower at retailers, but many consumers will need to wait for the price to drop because adding a $400 Micro SD card to a $199 on-contract Android phone is more than most users will be willing to pay.
