Android Wear Ad Debuts to Rival Apple Watch

In what was likely a perfectly timed release in an attempt to spoil a little of the Apple Watch announcement and release that kicked off this morning, today Google released a brand new video or quick commercial highlighting its own smartwatch platform, which is Android Wear.

Since first being announced back in March of last year, then released in April, Google’s Android Wear smartwatch platform has had a lot of interest and released on many impressive watches. Most notably the Moto 360 and LG G Watch R, to name a few. Their smartwatch comes in an array of different sizes, colors, and shapes, and Google is expressing that today.

Android Wear is a version of the Android operating system built and designed from the ground up for wearable devices, like the smartwatch or Google Glass, and is currently available on multiple smartwatches from Samsung, Sony, Motorola, LG and more. The new Apple Watch is pretty expensive, comes in one shape, and has some stiff competition from Android.

In another one of Google’s “Be Together, Not the Same” commercials, they’re showing the wide array of Android Wear smartwatches that are available from buyers. Different sizes, screens that are square or round, leather straps, all metal options and much more.

Most of the different options are in thanks to Motorola offering leather, plastic, and metal bands for its round Moto 360, but there’s also the LG G Watch, the G Watch R (that’s round) and even the Sony Smartwatch 3 that’s all plastic, water and dust resistant, and can handle any type of outdoor activity.

Today was all about Apple with a new Macbook, MacBook Air and Pro refreshes, and of course the new Apple Watch, but in an attempt to spoil the launch by a tiny bit Google dropped a brand new Android Wear video, embedded below for those interested.

This video is titled, “Android, Wear what you want” which is obviously a shot at Apple’s one design approach. And while the Apple Watch does come in three options and two sizes, they’re all square and relatively the same, aside from the build materials. And don’t even get us started on that $10,000 Apple Watch Edition that’s all gold.

The one thing that is clear with this video, is that Google is expressing the uniqueness and diversity of the many different Android Wear smartwatches available today from the Google Play Store. And yes, the Apple Watch will be wildly popular in the coming months, but it isn’t available just yet.

However, someone watching the video above will be rather confused, and have no idea as to what’s going on. The point is Google has a platform called Android Wear, which is what is running on most of the smartwatches available today. But watch the new Apple Watch ad released today over at The Verge, and you’ll notice some big differences in advertising. To each his own.

Over the course of the next few weeks we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot about the new Apple Watch, and most likely Google and its Android Wear partners will have a thing or two to say about their own options. Stay tuned.
